It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

  • Great North Run times not valid!!

A surprising revelation considering that this course has been used for the World Half Marathon championship and has seen a few 'world best' times run on it.

But it is not within the requirements of course design for recording valid times. It is now classified as a 'downhill course' with a net fall of 30.5m from the start in Newcastle to the finish in South Shields.

And it is also why Paula Radcliffe is recorded as having a PB of 1:06:47 despite having run a much quicker 1:05:40 in the GNR.

I cant really see how the net fall is much of an advantage to times since you seem to climb for miles and then all the decent happens in 30 seconds from the roundabout down to the coast.

It looks like a bit of a co-ck up on the organiser's part as you run steeply downhill right at the beginning. To make a valid course all you'd have to do is move the start forward down the dual carriageway and amend the finsihing point in Sth Shields.

It may make it more difficult to attract an 'elite' field to the GNR in future.

    Boston Marathon
When we were discussing qualifying times for New York and Boston the other day I was under the impression that it was similar to London in that a qualifying time was a means of getting a guaranteed place and that everyone else had to take their chances.
But far from it - it looks like that to run in Boston you HAVE to have run a qualifying time previously based on the table below:

To qualify for the 114th Boston Marathon, athletes must
meet the designated time standard which corresponds to
their age group. Qualifying times must have been run on or
after September 27, 2008 at a certified marathon. Seeding
is based on qualifying times, which are subject to review
    and verification.
    Age Group Men Women
    18–34 3hrs 10min 3hrs 40min
    35–39 3hrs 15min 3hrs 45min
    40–44 3hrs 20min 3hrs 50min
    45–49 3hrs 30min 4hrs 00min
    50–54 3hrs 35min 4hrs 05min
    55–59 3hrs 45min 4hrs 15min
    60–64 4hrs 00min 4hrs 30min
    65–69 4hrs 15min 4hrs 45min
    70–74 4hrs 30min 5hrs 00min
    75–79 4hrs 45min 5hrs 15min
    80–over 5hrs 00min 5hrs 30min

The first 25,000 who have reached the qualifying times are accepted.

Now if London had a similar system it would ensure that participants were fit enough and healthy enough to be there in the first place and, more importantly, that training would be taken seriously so as not to overwhelm the St John's Ambulance people on the day as happens at the moment.

It would also encourage more people to enter the sport if they were to see it as an athletic endeavour rather than a fancy dress parade.:p
