Congratulations - its not often we have 2 people achieving new longest distances on the same day. Great effort and puts you ahead of a lot of people who will be lining up in Newcastle.

Have to say I feel a lot more comfortable about the GNR now.
Actually looking forward to it now.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
  • Linda - well done! 12 miles, wow, I'd be soooo happy with that.

Hannah - go girl! Amazing, I'm hot on your tail. I have to learn to go slower, to get the miles in. I was so excited at my 'best time' I'm really struggling to slow myself down now to increase miles. MUST TRY HARDER!

Becky - you're right, I'm really achey. So I just 'power walked' delivering my daughters 190 guardian newspapers tonight, plus walk at the end - about 4 miles. I'm going to really really try hard to do a long slow run tomorrow. Please don't let me go too fast and burn out! Sloooowwww was how I got to running the distance in the first place, so sloooowwwww is how I need to build the miles. Too tempting to push hard, and then burn out. So hard to be a newbie!

I laughed so much at your post Becky - your rest didn't last an hour! Hilarious! Hugs to you, hope you feel better.

Out of interest, it looks like you guys much prefer Wimbledon Park Run to the Roundshaw one? Any comment on that? Planning on doing a park run this saturday.

    No, we like them all.:D:D

Its just that our two staple runs are Leeds and Wimbledon...we then venture to different parkruns every now and again for a change.

This Saturday Becky is doing Leeds and I've been enlisted as pacemaker (unpaid:rolleyes:).

I dont know about anyone else's plans for this week though......

Well done on your 12 miles Linda and in 10:49 mins/mile = very impressive indeed considering your 10k was at 13:13 mins/mile - just shows what regular training can achieve in a short space of time :D:D

Great improvement - hope you got some sleep in the end!

    Hi all

Well done on long runs Hannah and BOS, I have done 2 x 3 mile walks this week, calves not feeling too bad so tried a very gentle 3 mile run yesterday- not too hilly and felt OK. Calves have had a bit of tightness in them since so resting and stretching today- no time to get out anyway and will try again tomorrow.

  • This should be fun to watch on Sept 20th:

Two Fastest All-Time Go Head To Head In Berlin

Berlin, Germany - Haile Gebrselassie vs. Duncan Kibet – the two fastest marathon runners of all time will go head to head at the 36th real,- Berlin-Marathon on 20th September.

The Berlin Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race.

Haile Gebrselassie (36) from Ethiopia, World record holder with his stunning time of 2:03:59 last year, has won this marathon three times in a row and is aiming for another try on his own World record. He clocked his first World Marathon record in Berlin in 2007 (2:04:26).

The fast course has also attracted Kenya’s Duncan Kibet (31) to try for the record. No one ever came closer to Gebrselassie's record mark than Kibet, when winning the Rotterdam marathon last April his time was 2:04:27 making him the second fastest marathoner ever.

40,923 runners are expected to line up for one of the biggest marathons in the world with one million spectators estimated along the course.

  • Jeez - there are actually people who want to turn the Olympic marathon into a fun run now:rolleyes:, thank goodness the 2012 organisers have stuck to their guns:

But London 2012 organisers have shunned the opportunity for the Olympic marathon to be followed by a mass participation event.

Despite the appointment of the London Marathon organisers to manage the Olympic event, London 2012 remain "absolutely committed" to a three-lap marathon course - which would rule out a mass participation element - in order to allow spectators to see the runners more often.

But this comes just three days after the success of the marathon in Berlin, where more than 700,000 spectators lined the World Championship course for the elite event, followed by 8,000 fun runners taking part in the 10km Champions Run.

The Champions Run was a resounding success - a crowd rarely seen at an amateur event, a superb atmosphere and a route showcasing the history of Berlin, finishing at the unforgettable Brandenburg Gate.

The event - in which Steffen Uliczka crossed the line first in 30 minutes, 25 seconds while Horst Freiss trailed 1:39.52 hours - was hailed a "great success" by IAAF president Lamine Diack.

And the potential is there for a similar event in London to go beyond what Berlin produced - the landmark-studded Olympic marathon route reads like a guide book: Tower Bridge, London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and St Paul's Cathderal to name but a few of London's iconic sights.

So what better way to showcase the best the city has to offer and unite Olympians with your average Joe?

Athletics is the Games' blue-riband sport and organisers have missed a trick here.

The Olympic Games may well be the Greatest Show on Earth - but it looks as though we'll all just be watching from the sidelines.
