I am into my 4th week of my 10k training plan and the 4th week of me starting back to running after 6-7 years of doing nothing and I have been outside from the 3rd week!!
First 2 weeks I got myself to the 5k mark on the treadmill (at home) at a incline but when I got out on the roads it is a different ball game!! Far better feeling!!
If you read my previous post from this morning I did 3.7 miles last night and yes my legs are a bit sore but I am hoping to get out tonight again for the same distance - feeling good!!
Try outside then let us know how you get on!!!
Thanks, it's nice to find someone at a similar stage of training. You've done pretty well to get to 5K in just two weeks. I've been running on/off for the past year (before that I was a bit overweight and did no exercise whatsoever) and managed to get to 5K after about 6 months! Still, I felt so good after my 7K on Sunday that I just need to stay motivated and perhaps try running outside more. Can I ask, what kind of 10K training schedule are you following? I'm doing the Hal Higdon one which I found after a bit of googling.0 -
Miss_Cupcake I use to do a lot of running and weight training when I played a lot of Football and as Rich said in a post a long time ago that your mussels remember so it’s about building your cardiovascular up again!!
I am not really following a plan to the word but if I can run more at a night I will that’s the way I am completing it!!
I feel its all about consistency and feeling comfortable in your runs!! What I tend to do is try and get out 3 - 4 times a week and the nights that I don’t feel like it I put my running gear on anyway this usually motivates me to get out there!!0 -

Just to reinforce what the others have said, running outside is definitely the way forward. I really struggle to maintain any kind of motivation on the treadmill and find it *a lot* harder than running outside (I'd estimate around 4x harder, as I feel about as knackered doing 5k indoors as I do doing a half outdoors).
You hit the nail on the head when you said about the numbers - after about 5 seconds all I do is stare at the time going "am I there yet?" - it really takes the fun out of the thing.
Keep on mapping yourself different routes, keep mixing it up and you'll hold interest in your runs a lot more. I've just mapped a new one out for tomorrow and can't wait to get out there see what it's like.
Also, make sure you find a good distraction to run with. I find running with other people *a lot* easier than without, but failing that a good motivating playlist on the MP3 player is worth an extra couple of miles from my legs, I reckon.0 -
HWGA - yeah I remember you work A LOT - in that case just be realistic about what you can achieve and see how you get on - we can work from there and build up - luckily you've got loads of time
Thanks hon, I just need to keep an eye on here and follow advice + get out when poss and all will be well:rotfl:I'm sure it will, no I know it will:T
