Wow, history lesson in the thread this morning - how on earth do you find/know these various nuggets of info rich? :T
Pleased to hear it is just a cold becky (I say just, but you know what I mean!).
Anyway, today's run was 5.5m in 56:33 (10:16/mile pace).
Total for the week = 12.3m0 -

I'd say that's more likely the reason - you'll still have been catching up a little from the run the day before, nothing to worry about anyway, just keep plodding
Anyway, I did an 8.5 in the end today, lovely route, actually. Ran out with a couple of friends, but then thought I'd test my pace on the way back, so averaged something like 9:30 for the first 3 miles, but then picked it up til I was doing 7:30 for the last couple. Total time 1:15, average overall 8:45
Makes me feel like a sub50 time could be possible on Sunday - and I'd like to beat my other 10k time (49:29 iirc) - not too bothered, but it would be nice.0 -

I had an idea that this was the reason why!!!
I will ensure to have a banana every day at least 2 hours before i go out running to keep my energy levels correct.
I hope to do a 10k in Sep and would really like to do it under 1 hour in your opinion am I going the correct way to achieve this?
I was also going to buy a Polar heart rate monitor but noticed others had ecg facilities and wonder would this type be better??
I used to have a ordinary Timex Ironman watch years ago when I ran a lot I found that very good, would a heart rate monitor be useful for me at this stage?0 -

Sorry, think you miss understood me slightly. I think the "then ran" (ie bold) part of your post is why you were struggling a little yesterday. The banana will have had a little impact, but not a whole lot.
I certainly find I can't put the same effort in on "used" legs as I can on "fresh" legs, just the way it works.
A lot of people on here use HR monitors to track their effort etc - personally I've never taken too much interest in them, I prefer to use my Garmin and track my distance, pace etc rather than effort level, but each to his own.
If you're doing 3.7 miles already, the 10k's easily achievable by September. The "under an hour" bit is a little more tricky...But if you can get a couple done in 1:05ish in training before the race, you stand a good chance of getting down there once the adrenalin kicks in on race day.
Personally, I'd look at getting the 10k distance under your belt ASAP, then start working toward bringing the pace down in any time that's left, probably by alternating shorter faster runs with longer slower ones. Rich or Becky are probably better placed to provide more detailed training advice, though tbh, I tend to do things a bit more "freestyle"
What 10k are you going for in September? I'm heading for the Swansea 10k then abouts, so will need to be training hard in the next couple of months - have a new years resolution to get this down to <40 mins, which is a way below the current PB, but gotta have a dream, innit0 -
Ooh, just noticed that your first 3.7 was 34mins - if that's your current pace and you keep running a couple of times a week, I'd have thought you'll cruise to <60 for the 10k come september , pending some kinda disaster0

Thanks for you response Idiophreak.
I feel I can achieve the 10k and I know its a bit much to be asking to get it under the hour mark but as you said "gotta have a dream"!!
I will try to get a 4-5 miler done this wkd as I will not be our running again until Thursday evening so I will probably leave it to Sunday evening fresh legs!!
I was never really into speed but it’s good to keep track I think I just like to get good distance in as it feels good!!
Garmin's are a bit expensive but it would be good to track your distance as there are times I could probably run more!!
I might just opt for one of the Timex Ironman watches again as it good for the stopwatch!!
The 10k I hope to do is the Laganside 10k Belfast!!0 -
Dont bother with HR monitor - you'll get a natural feel for 'effort levels' which are far more important anyway - some peeps have been discussing this as they were over the 'max' apparenty but felt fine effort wise...:D
If you can run more then just tack a loop onto the end of the run and measure it afterwards - I do that often - go and run some of my loops and see where I am afterwards, I also measure my HR after some sessions and just keep a rough note for my own interest
Oh and September is loads of time to crack 60 mins, my dream is sub 40 also but thats a year or two off I'd say - only Rich has managed it so far but I reckon Uk cant be that far away0 -
Yeah 34 mins for 3.7 miles I was very pleased with, as I used to run 4.5 mile in around 34mins!!
I feel my legs have remembered the running but my lungs and breathing just need trained again!!
Also found my traps top of my back are sore as they need training again!!0 -
can not belive my legs are still stiff from sunday.... :rotfl:
not even the furthest i have run .Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -
Effort levels Uk - not distance - you know that
Makes you stiff when you push into new time territories - but think of all the benefit you'll be getting from it0
