evening everyone - have been lurking this week, as running-wise am struggling. Well health-wise really. Have had an on-off stomach bug since coming off anti-biotics nearly two weeks ago. I keep thinking I'm ok, and attempt some very gentle jogging - and about 20 minutes in, I feel rubbish and stomach protests.

Anyway - friend of mine has entered a local half-marathon. She's pretty inspirational actually - neither of us are particularly 'sporty', but she has gone from no running and has just built her distances up. V proud of her as she's got two really young children.

Will continue to lurk til body sorts itself out:rolleyes:

Morning all (I've only skimmed through the previous pages but good running to all and Rich, could you add me to the race list please? Eden Project Marathon on 11 October.

I'm actually out of bed at this hour on a Sunday morning :eek::eek: I can't believe.

I'm running 18 miles this morning, taking in Richmond Park because of its hills then I'm off to Notting Hill with my sister at (allegedly) 1pm. Hmmm, I think it will be closer to 2pm myself, legs permitting :D

I'm currently working my way through a large bowl of cornflakes and will drink even more water before I step out the door at 9/9.30.

    I'll report back later :hello:

Good luck Simply and Poorbabe on your long runs today :D

Rupee - hope your stomach gets better soon - running can sometimes aggravate such things as it churns everything up so make sure you keep it very gentle if you do go out!

    morning all.

it seems ages since ive had chance to catch up,

well as eagle eyed Rich noticed I managed to do my third park run.

my time amazed me if im honest. I nearly didnt go as i was feeling a bit knackered after a busy week at work. anyway after i quick warm up i felt better but when i came round to half way and they shouted out the time i thought i was gonna be in trouble setting off too quick but somehow kept going.....

sorry I didnt say hello to you guys but I didnt have time to come on here to see who was going.....
    next time........

1 week to go to first half marathon since I started running properly.

a bit nervous as i have not had time for a long run recently and this week is busy.

Well done to all on your runs, I really will try to catch up at work (after all what is the point of going to work if you cant catch up with dfw runners club!!)

i was thinking of doing a 10 miler tom orrow after work and then my 2x6km commuter runs tues-thurs and resting up.
    What do you think.......

Mascott - from the way the parkrun times are falling you must be in decent shape, so your training should stand you in good stead for next week.

I'm not sure what distance work you have done, but you certainly have the speed to see you through to a time as low 1:50. So if you're aiming for sub 2hours the speed element is fine.

As far as runs for the next week are concerned the plan should be 'little but often'. If this is a target race then you dont train in the last week, since you cant get any training benefits in that sort of time. Instead you are simply keeping things ticking over, blood flowing around to disperse waste products and keeping muscles elastic to prevent sluggishness on the day.

So do whatever you feel like but keep it easy and dont have more than a couple of complete rest days in the week - a 2/3 mile jog in 30 minutes is better than a rest at this stage.

Oh, and just discovered that the fastest UK 10K runner ever is also a parkrunner. It was a while back but Mo Farah has completed one! Its another bonus of getting into regular parkruns, you never know who you might be brushing shoulders with.

  • hi Rich

    thanks for the advice.

i have been struggling to get enough distance work in. I have managed to complete 13 miles a couple of weeks ago and a couple of 10k/miles here and there but not a sustained program.

i will take on board your advice and make sure i take it easy. my main reason for the 10 miler is to try and get my pace right as i have been doing loads of 5/6 km runs and i need to set my pace in my legs so i dont go off too quick or over compensate and crawl round.

    hi
Just popped in to say thanks for advice Bank_of_slate and Rich!
Continued doing stretches and went for 3 mile walk this morning, some small twinges of calves but not too bad and feeling better for getting out :D

Will try a couple more days of the walking I think and if twinges feel better- a short flattish run.
