Depends on the race length Simply ;) You'll not catch me running some of my races non stop.

Me personally i run pretty much all of my more normal length races except if its a half or longer on steep hills as i find it quicker to walk than run up them. I also usually walk though the drinks stations as i cant drink from plastic cups or most bottles when moving at speed. Conversely in 5/10k's i am known to not bother with water as i know it would slow me down and !!!!!! up a PB shot.

For my long stuff its more a case of working out fuelling plans based on race distance, checkpoint spacing and terrain. Also the weather not surprisngly is a large influence for these races.

  • Good luck for your 5 miler 1Hannah - you'll be fine. Based on the weather here willstewart, it should be great for a 20 miler today.

Good running Simply and Evab :)

This morning was a lets run through treacle morning :o 10.25 miles done in 1:45:21 (10:16/mile). I shouldn't complain about that pace I guess but it sure as hell didn't feel that fast enroute, and all the way round my legs felt like they did last week after 10 miles. There was heaviness and no push in the legs, and when I tried to force the issue, my body started to give me a stitch - either way my body was refusing to run faster. Suppose it is only fair after a few good runs again recently  Was just getting used to much more comfortable runs of 10 miles tho'!

Total for the week = 28.8 miles.

Lovely weather here though - wee nip in the air first thing (still shorts and t-shirt weather IMHO), and then the sun got going into a lovely clear sky but with some freshness in the air. Enjoy all your runs peeps.

Blimey its not actually raining and even looks like a dry day for a change. Best take advantage and go for a wee bimble around later on then. Nothing too strenous being i have a 10k tomorrow but then i know just the route i want to go down and its 8 miles or so. Best stick a few fast bursts in too to remind the legs what speed is ;)

Another 10k on tuesday night too which could be fun. Nowt next weekend then the 13th is a 10 mile race in the local clubs grand prix so i'd better put some effort into it. 95 mins was last years time i think. Day before though i'm playing footie in Manchester so will be calling into HP for the 5k in the morning i think as a warm up ;) Week after this is Langdale marathon then 2 weeks after that it'll be Loch Ness marathon. Not much time for long runs bar next weekend so i'm gonna go for the different but possibly doable method of PBing at Loch Ness based on a fair few 8-12 mile runs (can sneak these in during the week) and trust to these 5 and 10's boosting my speed nicely.

Re run/walk, I know that I will be really disappointed if I have to walk at all when I do the 10k next month but when I signed up for the race a few weeks ago I didn't think I would be able to run it all, just shows how quickly things can change I guess!

A really good parkrun this morning with a new pb for this course of 18:42 (previous best 19:03). With most of the improvement coming through on the second lap it shows that the strength work is starting to show through as the taper begins to take effect.:D

So very happy with that one!!

Becky is very happy to have improved again to 25:57 and Poorbabe recorded 25:46 for her first ever parkrun.

UK is either still running or found the allure of the Saturday morning pillow too tempting!:p

Good runs yesterday, Simply and evab, and a great achievement on the new longest distance today Hannah!

Krider - Dont worry about runs like that, it shows you've done plenty work recently and are about to reap the rewards at some point soon.

Kms - Good luck with the 10K tomorrow.

I comfortably did 2 circuits of my usual street route yesterday which was 8 miles.

Tomorrow morning I'm going for 3 circuits which will be 12 miles, once I know I can do that I'll be looking forward to the Great North Run a lot more :T

We'll be swimming afterwards too which is lovely and relaxing after a long run

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

    Hi all

Sounds like a good parkrun for lots of you today.

I'm after a bit of advice, after my good week last week (24 miles- felt good for all M-8 m, T- rest, W- 5m, Th- rest, F- 8m, Sa-rest, Su- 3m) this week has not gone so well. Mon- 3 miles felt fine. Tu- attempted 5 miles managed 4 before calves were hurting, I did do one of my normal loops in reverse and the long steep hill was definitely tough on my calves. They were really feeling it so had W and Th as rest days, made sure I was stretching them, tried a run on Fri and had to stop after 1 mile. Calves now have constant dull ache :( so not sure what to do

Have another few rest days? Try a short flattish run? I am thinking it was the combination of a heavier mileage week combined with big hill- but thoughts from experienced runners appreciated. I was hoping to run GNR training plans a bit awry now

    TIA

Have you tried doing some gentle stretches smetf?

Sounds like you might have over exerted yourself a bit!

Smetf - Theres no problem with how the calves are reacting, they've simply reacted to the large increase in workload by tightening themselves up to let the repairs be done.

However, because the remedial work is assisted by bloodflow it is better to keep active than totally resting - the answer is to walk steadily, not too quickly, with the sole aim of promoting the bloodflow and trying to break up a bit of the scar tissue.

UK - Thats a bit worrying! Ah well, we'll see you shortly, I'm sure!

I notice Mascott was also at Wimbledon today as well with another PB of 24:46. Well done, mascott!!
