Hi all - Simply not the only disaster run today...
Pulled a muscle in the back of the my thigh on lap two and even though I was going well I decided at that point to quit and hope to save it for the run at fleetwood - the decision was hastened by the burning sun (am now very pink!)...not too disappointed - think dehydration caused the muscle to go from the change of surfaces (some of the run was on grass and some on tarmac)...
I will be back to run that one next year though

A bit of a 'circumstances conspiring against' this morning.
Firstly, the good points - fantastic course, flat as a pancake, and great organisation. Fun atmosphere all round....except the race!
The first problem was the start time...11am which hit the very hottest part of the day. The sun was literally burning before we even started and the mercury just kept rising up the thermometer from there.
Added to this the several beers in the sun yesterday afternoon acting as tour guides for American visitors meant there was only one word to ponder....DEHYDRATION!
Obviously started cautiously to get a feel for how things were actually going to pan out....but going through halfway in 43:21 indicated that the writing was on the wall and it was time to make a decision. To repeat that to record something in the region of 1:26 was just not going to happen so the question was whether to call it a day at that point...or to find a logical reason to continue.
I started on another lap while I pondered and it was very shortly after that the legs just went...nothing left to give at all, which is a sure sign of dehydration. And that made my mind up....the feeling in the legs was just like the closing stages of a marathon...therefore a perfect opportunity to run 6.5 miles on very tired legs.
It is the only time I can ever remember using 12 water stations during a half marathon......and yet needing 50!!
The second half in 50:08 was laborious but at least gave some useful feedback out of what would otherwise have been a wasted race.:D
Well done to anyone who has braved the heat - I dont think I'd have been out here at 11am if it hadnt been a race.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

seems only me had a good day then.

I might even put it down to my insouls mind.. im guessing with the shock in the legs being less it uses up less energy or something along them line.. with next weeks sunday being the start of my taper so it will only be 10m I went for my legs bettween 17m - 19m and was shocked to find that i could take both them miles at around the 7.20 mile pace
..
which is nice but still got a feeling i wont PB in Bristol... dont know why but just dont think i have a sub 1hr 35m in my legs... or maybe I just need a few days tapper to feel right.
But at least we won the cricket Rich!!!Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -
The insoles and the EARLY start, UK!!!!:D:D
Bristol is flattish, so get some good weather and you should have a reasonable chance of a PB.
Anyway, far more importantly, see how the Wimbledon 5K goes first...that will tell you what sort of half marathon speed is there.:D
Yep, not a good day to be a wallaby.:p Just waiting to hear all the tooting horns and flag waving going on.......
Simply, 12 miles in 2:09 would have been good in any conditions not so long ago. Theres certainly nothing wrong with that sort of run when dehydrated - the effects are beyond your control once you get into a dehdrated state during a run...its too late to drink basically.
So theres no problem at all, its just one of those days - and, as Becky say, if you didnt have bad runs you wouldnt feel so good about the good ones.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I was wondering how the race had gone Becky and Rich. Sorry to hear it didn't go too well for either of you; looks like the weather definitely wasn't a friend to us today.

Hmmm .... perhaps that didn't come out as I meant it to :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
What I should have said is - it's a good job it's Uk running in Athens as he runs well in the heat. Phew - think I might have wriggled out of that one

Hi,
I feel like a proper runner now, I did my first 10 miler today.
It's been very warm and stuffy here so it was pretty hard going!
I was glad of the cool rain shower by mile 6, I love running in the rain.
Getting very sick of idiots driving past blasting their horn and shouting things out of the window
My legs feel like jelly and I didn't even notice the two big blisters on the toes of my left foot until I was in the bath afterwards, I must have REALLY zoned out while running.
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -
Alias - those shins don't sound good - take care of them as well as hitting the running targets
evab - sounds a nice relaxing outing without worrying about timings - I'm slowly learning they are sometimes the best thing
Simply - shame about the run but at least you knew to stop and deal with the hydration
Great new distances run k_bagpuss and bank :j
More good running UK
becky - carrying on with the sensible head again - good decision to give it chance to heal
rich - pleased you can find some +ves from the race
Seems hydration is getting us all one way or the other. Don't think I rehydrated that well after my run yesterday given the headache (no alcohol involved) later in the day. Legs ached as well, but all right as rain this morning after some sleep. So I went for a bike ride with the OH on the rest day
