Well for comparison my 10 mile time is 1:24 and my 1/2 pb is 1:56, now my half pb is pretty soft - in that according to my 10 mile time I should be slightly faster, but the first half I ran was 2:05ish and that was after my 10 mile run - so it does take a while to get the hang of the right pacing for1/2s I think.
At the end of day though what matters most is the belief that you can so keep that one going and try to plan your race based on mins/mile that will get you to that time you want - you can always adjust mid race if you start to feel the pace is too much0 -
InaPickle - I went from running novice in August 08 to FLM in April 09!
However, I ran up to 50 miles a week - I put my whole life into doing it and it was still very very hard work on race day and if I had the chance to go back I wouldnt have done it like that - I would have taken two years and really got into my running stride before attempting a marathon (I also wouldnt have done London as I found the lonliest race I've ever done and really miserable to be honest!)...
I finished in 4:31 so nothing disgraceful but I know there is so much more in me - I cant wait to really conquer the marathon distance (maybe in a few years time) - my next mara is in April next year and I'm hoping to shave quite a bit off that pb, but apparently it takes 6 years to get to your peak for marathons so I've got a while to go yet
It is interesting that you post this Becky. (You really do have your sensible head on today) I remember that when you were training, nothing, NOTHING, was going to stop you from doing FLM that year. I'm not criticising, I was exactly the same the first time I ran a full marathon. I think that it is only after you have run the race that the enormity of it actually becomes real. I think hindsight is especially wonderful when it comes to marathon running. I would be surprised if there was a single one among us who would run/train for our first race in exactly the same way the second time.
As long as a runner is training properly and has long enough to do a thorough training programme, allowing for illness, injuries, etc. I think they should have a go. They will learn massively from the whole experience - nutrition, training, injuries, etc. and will be a more rounded person as a result. If a runner gets through the training (especially the long runs) , he/she has earned the right to line up with the rest. They might cross the line saying 'never again' but more likely they will say 'next time I'll train differently/drink more water/wear different shoes/use more vaseline.....etc, etc.'

I agree Chick - I really wanted to do it - which is quite odd because I've never watched it on tv or didnt know anything about running either (although I was up to about 10 miles when I got my place and about 5 before I got offered it I think).
I was just trying to explain my experience of it looking back - but as always isnt hindsight a wonderful thing - I'll never do London again I know that, but straight after my first question to Rich was - whens the next one so it cant have all been bad0 -

Thanks, chickadee - I hope I do, too! (And I bet when I come out the other side of it I will say that I would change just about EVERYTHING about the way I trained! Please call me 'Pickle'

I'm doing the great north run in 4 weeks time, better step up the old training!
Did an 8 miler last night quite comfortably, need to really push the distance a bit more now
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -
Hi all
Bit of an odd week for me last week and this due to dh's shifts/ childcare issues! Managed to do 4 miles, 3miles, 4miles last week.
This week so far done 8 miles, 5 miles, 8 miles- will probably fit in a shortish run Sun am, then back to 3 shortish runs and a 10 mile attempt next week.
Tried a few different routes which I've enjoyed incl taking my 8yo on her bike for a 4 mile run round local reservoir- which we both really enjoyed. My 8 miles today was supposed to be longer but dh had over estimated distance, I took it slowly thinking I was attempting 10 miles so it took 2 hours and was gutted when we got home and worked out how far i actually ran!
My 8 miles on Mon was 1 hr 40 but i did push a lot harder ( and was spurred on early in the run by the rotweiler chasing me  heart was pounding, legs shaking- running quite fast, lost it by crossing 2 roads but not nice experience at all!)
V interesting discussion on the London marathon, for me I guess I've always watched it on telly and thought I'd love to do that one day, it sounds from what others say it might be pretty hard work to get myself to that level for April 2010 but I am finding it really motivates me knowing I've got a place, and also doing that and the GNR friends and family are really supporting me, although I have been surprised by the number of people asking if I plan to actually 'run' it- I've never watched it and thought 'I'd love to walk that one day'
Happy running all

Congrats on the 13 miler evab. Interesting on the difference in reported race times by your colleague... Some other good running going on too with some good mileage going on.
Good luck with weekend races, and long runs, peeps.
Very nice posts on approaching a marathon from becky and Chickadee too. Currently it is not a plan for me (I say currently...) as I know I could not devote the time required with the other things going on in my life. However I'm really pleased with what I've learnt preparing for the half in the areas mentioned like nutrition, speed-v-distance in training, importance of core miles, etc. I can take that forward whatever distance I choose.0 -

Oh noooo that sounds horrible  I'm not a dog fan at the best of times. Hate it when they lunge at you when on a lead, never mind one that was looseI must stop jumping into traffic to avoid them though - seems silly that I'd rather take on a motor vehicle than a dog!

Good running Linda and smetf don't be too disheartened about the slightly less mileage, can you do a route that is 5 miles out and 5 miles in? I hate bloody dogs, when I was running along the beach the other day this woman was walking her dog (on a lead) and she didn't rein it in until the yappy little thing was barking at me and getting under my feet. I would be mortified if a rotweiler was chasing me!
I do think that it's important to do what's right for you krider, I might actually find the marathon horrendous and never want to do one again or do a flatter one! It does take up a lot of time to train, I'm lucky to have a flexible job in terms of hours and a very supportive husband who also knows what it takes to train.0 -
Ukeavs's 10p???
Well i have been training for 8 months and feel that i have put the miles in. I still have just under 3 months to go. Now to a certain degre im naturaly fit anyway but still know that the lest few miles will be painfulland buy the time it comes around nearly a good year training will have gone into it.
