He's determined okay....but to the point of foolishness. I wonder what he thinks people's motives are for talking him out of it, other than to help him?

To be honest the way he 'talks' really reminds me of a friend of mine with certain mental health problems - the grand overambitious ideas, the refusal to take advice, determined to prove everyone wrong etc. I really hope he changes his mind somehow before he does himself some damage - I wouldn't like to wish an injury on anyone but I suspect it's inevitable if he embarks on training like that, and maybe, hopefully it'll make him see sense.

Hmm, you'd better hope I keep hanging around this thread Rich; I'm both older and slower :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Still being old beats the alternative ;)

evab - a big well done on your 13 miles!!!! :T

An interesting thread Rich - I've bookmarked it to see if the guy keeps posting. It'll probably turn into another of the '100 reasons why I can't run today' threads that appear with amazing regularity on RW.

After yesterday's 'not the most enjoyable run' an early night and a late (ish) morning seems to have done the trick. A very relaxed and comfortable 10 miles completed today. :D:D I'm not sure what happened to the rain that was forecast but it was sunny and cool and a pleasure to be out in.

Today's strangest sight? I saw a chap running with bare feet  He was carrying his socks and his trainers were nowhere to be seen - most curious.

    Hi all! :)

I've just followed the thread to Runner's World as I was intruiged about the discussion about the man who posted there. I was reading some of the comments about training to run a marathon. As I've already mentioned, my eventual aim is to run a marathon, preferably the London Marathon next year (good luck in getting a place withstanding). Obviously, training for a marathon is a big, big, big undertaking, but after reading some of the comments put by runners about that guy (who is obviously quite a different case to mine), I'm starting to wonder if even I might be being a bit optimistic.

What do you guys think? As I've already mentioned I'm a novice with a bit of a spare tyre, but I've been thinking about this and looking up about it for a while so I don't think I'm completely naive about what is required (obviously the aching muscles haven't hit yet! ;) ) but will there be enough time if I train properly from September onwards (not including August in my plans as finishing dissertation and any walking I get in is a bonus.)

    Thanks anyway. :D

InaPickle - I went from running novice in August 08 to FLM in April 09!

However, I ran up to 50 miles a week - I put my whole life into doing it and it was still very very hard work on race day and if I had the chance to go back I wouldnt have done it like that - I would have taken two years and really got into my running stride before attempting a marathon (I also wouldnt have done London as I found the lonliest race I've ever done and really miserable to be honest!)...

I finished in 4:31 so nothing disgraceful but I know there is so much more in me - I cant wait to really conquer the marathon distance (maybe in a few years time) - my next mara is in April next year and I'm hoping to shave quite a bit off that pb, but apparently it takes 6 years to get to your peak for marathons so I've got a while to go yet :D

Popped out early for a quick run.

Mapped it out to be 13.29miles.

A bit of an issue with the times..

    Up too 10.49 miles - 1hr 37mins
    Remainder 2.80miles - 45mins ( i walked it)

    Total time - 2hrs 24mins (:()

Started at 11am, as the great north run starts at 11am, best get some daytime running in so im use to it. Started good, smooth, then the dead legs came. Walked a bit, ran a bit, walked a bit, ran a bit. By the 10miles mark they legs were hurting real bad.

Decided to put the distance in anyhow, was that bad that when i was walking the back of my thighs hurt, if i ran the back of the calfs hurt.

I was really gutted, as i knew i could of knocked the final 2.80 miles out in about 23-24mins normally putting me at the under 2hrs for the day.

    Though i'll try again.. :)

The previous 3 runs were -

    6miles
    8.12miles
    8.12miles

    With the furthest being 10.42miles.

Alias - sub 2 maybe a tad ambitious - I'm only just aiming for that! But hopefully you'll nab it on the day :D

Your body rebelled because you went much higher than your previous highest distance so give it some easy runs for a while before attemtping another long one maybe this time next week?

(hopefully it'll rain and be lovely and cool on race day anyway ;))

my sub 2 hours is based on myself completing the first 10k in 50mins, then the 2nd 10k in 50mins, leaving myself 20mins to finish the remainder 1mile or so..

Im sure that if i could of run the last loop, i would of been knocking on that 2hr mark. I guess the times are there based upon todays run & previous runs..

    8miles - 1hr 13mins
    10miles - 1hr 37mins
    13miles - ????

Of course, on the day running with people will help. Just have to remember not to pick up water at every station, take one, miss one as per the road races ive been doing..

    Water in = Water out

This time next week, another airshow.

Will be down at the top gear track, for dunsfold wheels and wings again.

Its bank holiday weekend, so more beers than miles again...

If anyone is near guildford, pop down and say hi...

This is what we do for a living, im part of the groundcrew. This display is at a car / bike event. So to have this thing flying around makes a big impact. On the recruiting side of things, its massive as everyone at an airshow has seen it now and then. Not many car/bike people have..

    Enjoy..
