Well, if you resting HR is fairly high I wouldn't worry about it. Tour de France riders regularly exceed 200 BPM, even though their resting heart rate is normally in the 40s (sometimes 30s). You should be able to run at 90% MHR for quite some time, as long as you can keep it up!

  • Hi again

I never got running at all at the wkd due to me taking sick on Saturday and being resorted to bed all day???

I was going to try and run last night but still felt a bit tired so I never pushed it!!

I hope to get running tonight either outside or treadmill because my wife has now taken the bug so it will be hard to get out with the 2 children!!

Yeah, it's fine. You can even take it up to 90-100% for short periods. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions (esp. heart), you should ask your GP. If you are otherwise healthy it's no problem. Maybe others can confirm to set your mind at rest?!

I believe you. I feel fine, no medical conditions etc. Just when my bf wonders that I was happy when my heart rate kept at low 160's and his is a lot lower, you think if there's something wrong with you...:o

Thanks guys. Maybe I should just leave the heart rate monitor at home...and if I run outside I can't take it with me cos the watch part is not working anyway...

Well, my resting heart rate is fairly low, about 52 last time I checked. I never get near 160 BPM, I'd get out of breath long before. But everyone's different, so there's no point comparing yourself in that way. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you! The guidelines for maximum heart rates are what is considered safe. No reason to worry.

Hi tirlittan, I had exactly the same problem as you do. I was using a heart rate monitor but stopped using it. Seeing my heart rate go so high just worried me, so I decided that not knowing is better. My HR was also in the 150 - 160 region when I was doing track intervals. I have no idea what it is on regular runs.

Thanks chickadee for that. I think maybe I'll run couple of weeks/a month without the heartrate monitor and then check if heart rate's gone down at all with more running.
