    Scorgeous, sorry you didn't feel well enough to do your 10k. I hope you're soon feeling better, and up to your next run. I have also pulled out of races at the last minute and it is horrible. I was watching the clock, thinking "I would have been lining up now, I would have been at the half-way point now, I would have finished by now". I hope you bounce back quickly.

    Hi.
    I have a question. When I run, my heart rate goes really high up, but this is even when I don't feel I'm working that hard. So should I just keep my pace down till my heart rate goes lower or keep at the pace I can run though my heart rate is near 85%?

    It's just bit annoying cos if I pick up the pace so I'm actually running properly, not jogging, my heart rate skyrockets and am not sure why and what I should do about it. No hurry though, might not get to run this week cos so many other things cropping up.

    Expect this is the most irresponsible advice ever, but I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you're really really concerned about HR zones, etc, if you're finding the running comfortable I would just let your heart do what it needs to do.

    You may find, anyway, that persisting at that effort level isn't actually as easy as it seems initially.

    tirlittan, we all have different resting and "peak" heart rates and it can depend on a number of things, including age. When you say it skyrockets, are you actually measuring the HR, or does it just seem high to you? If you are measuring, let us know the rate it is going to. Also, let us know you resting heart rate, it's useful to get a frame of reference.

    P.S. Your Maximum heart rate is as follows:

    MHR = 220 - Age.

    You should not normally exceed 90% of this for prolonged periods. But that still allows for a heart rate that may seem very high to you..

    If you mean you are running at 85% of your MHR, that should be fine and there is no reason to worry about it. You should find that your heart rate at that pace will drop with time.

    Thanks guys.
    Yes, that's 85% of MHR. I'm 30. Sometimes it builds up gradually, i.e. I've run 10 mins and it goes up to 150'ish, then after another 5-10 it could go to 160's. But sometimes it just seems to get to 160's quite quickly and that's me running at 8k/hr pace. If I want to keep my heart rate 150's, I have to run at 7.5k/hr. Not sure what my resting heart rate is, probably in 70's? Need to check tomorrow morning.

    Compared to by bf's, my heart rate is quite hight at rest as well. I'm only 5'4" so don't have many excuses except obviously being unfit. But then again, I can do the 5k run and I can play beach volleyball all day long so not sure why my heart's not catching up?! :o Must get fitter!!!
