EC - A week before a race is no problem for doing a 6.65 miler, in fact the day before is no problem as long as you keep the intensity low. The 55 min target is not really a problem - in fact I'm a bit puzzled why that is the target when you're pretty much doing that in every training session, theres a big difference between training and racing. I often train in the region of 55min 10Ks to race at sub 40:00 10K, so you should either be really easing off in training or your race pace is going to be a lot quicker than you think.

As far as the dark, non-pavement roads are concerned - sounds a bit risky but if you have no alternatives and there is very little traffic about I suppose you just have to be ready to jump on to the verge/in the bushes should things get a bit tricky.

  • Didnt get out at all since last tuesday when I did my 6.65 miler as I went out with works mates on Friday and suffered all weekend (I am getting to old for too much drink!!)

Got out this morning and only did 3.1 miles got it tough enough but my time was 26.58 which is on course for sub 55 mins 10k!!

Hopefully get out tomorrow morning and do my 6.65 miler as my 10k event is next wednesday evening!!

By doing 6.65 tomorrow is this too close to the event?

Also, this morning at 5am it was nearly dark and I live in the country with no street lights or footpaths. Does anyone run in the winter mornings where ther are no street lights or footpaths?? Is this a good idea?

Earlier in the year I used a flashing arm band but maybe you should have a hi-viz top and a light torch strapped somewhere

I did the same evab last year - I dont have a problem with people raising money - its the fact that in some races now you have to raise money to get a place which just seems vastly unfair...

Exactly what i was trying to say.

  • I have no experience of races as this one will be my first and its just something i am aiming for from my beginning running again!!

Just feeling a bit off today as I only managed 3.1 miles this morning but will hopefully have got all the bad toxins out of my system this morning?

Okay Rich the pattern is (i'm ignoring the first week when the distances were wrong and I was all over the place :p)

    07/07 - 800m Avg 4:13 fastest 4:07
    14/07 - 400m Avg 1:54 fastest 1:47
    21/07 - 200m Avg 56 fastest 53
    28/07 - 1m - Avg 8:03 fastest 8:00
    04/08 - 800m Avg 3:55 fastest 3:51

So I'm getting faster - but I'm also very consistent - the averages and the fastest are pretty close together I think :D

Does it tell you anything else yet?

The whole concept of doing anything for charity is that you should be doing something out of the ordinary and/or very challenging.

That rules out anyone who does something as part of a hobby/routine, ie regular runners.

This is the point that a lot of people dont get - especially the Johnny 'I'll do a practise run the weekend before and I'll be fine' pratts, who think they've got just as much 'right' to be there as anyone else.

The majority of places in the VLM are now reserved for this type of 'havent got a clue' type entries. I can assure you that that was not the intention of Chris Brasher when he founded the London Marathon in 1981.

So the VLM, which cant be ignored because it is the flagship event and the National Championships, is now pretty much classed as a silly fun run in the running world.

Because the charity feeding frenzy 'only' allows 700 charities to get a share of the pie there are 500 other charities, plus the 700 wanting more and more, getting their tentacles into the majority of other races around the country and freezing regular runners out of those also.

It would be great to just ignore any race that has been infected but unfortunately there are limits on road closures and therefore starting new events is very difficult, so we face a future where possibly virtually every race is effectively freezing out regular runners to turn itself into a fancy dress party. Now how can that make sense to anybody?

So why do races get infected if the organisers are dead set against the idea? Simply because the charities start early and encourage non-runners to get their entries in as soon as entries open, which is often 12 months before. When normal runners try to enter 4-6 weeks before an event they find that the event was full months ago.

The following year the charities will go to the organisers and offer them a sum of money for 'guaranteed places' so upping the organisers income. The organiser knows the end result will be the same so they may as well take the money. And so on and so forth....

    07/07 - 800m Avg 4:13 fastest 4:07 8:26/mile 8:46/mile
    14/07 - 400m Avg 1:54 fastest 1:47 7:36/mile 8:26/mile
    21/07 - 200m Avg 56 fastest 53 7:28/mile 8:28/mile
    28/07 - 1m - Avg 8:03 fastest 8:00 8:03/mile 8:03/mile
    04/08 - 800m Avg 3:55 fastest 3:51 7:50/mile 8:10/mile

Thats looking good. If you use 20secs/mile as the differential between distances the blue figures are the overall trend. That looks about right as you've got more comfortable with the routine of doing them.

You'll probably find that your next 400 session will be in line with the last 2 weeks, or maybe slightly quicker.:D

Thats interesting because you can tell I was bit off today as they were slower than last weeks on the blue time ;)

So I should be looking at about 1:45 then for next week?? Mind you we are double racing this weekend so that may have an effect :p

I cant wait to get below 8 mins for my mile ones on 3 weeks!!! I so want to be down at 7 mins/mile again :D

I'd say 1:45-1:50 by putting in an equivalent effort.:D

Are we entering on the day for Sunday then? I'm hoping to do my long run on Thursday instead you see!

Yep, we're entering on the day now. So far 103 male entries and 52 female with a limit of 400 so should be fine.:D
