I agree its frustrating not being able to get into certain races- unless you take a charity place, however I also have charity to thank for me getting into running and for loosing weight. A friend bullied me into race for life- I was overweight and did no exercise - the fact that it was not a massively competitive race and that many even walk it convinced me to sign up- and so the running bug began. Local running club events are great but often come accross as for very serious super quick runners only (not having a go at runners or the clubs I hope to be there one day). With charity races the emphasis is on raising money for an organisation you belive in- the fact that cancer research is close to my heart pushed me to complete my training and to complete the course :-)(Family of 5: 2 adults & 3 children aged 7yrs, 4yrs, and 18months)0

Sounds good to me (but then I am doing two halfs in two weeks
), treat it like a training run and have some fun - you'll be fine
Not sure about the calf - sounds like it might be water/salt related - try drinking a bit more for a few days and see if it helps
Just reread your post- 2 halfs in 2 weeks?! wow i'm impressed, the thought of 1 4 weeks before marathon terrifies me- what sort of times are you hoping for?(Family of 5: 2 adults & 3 children aged 7yrs, 4yrs, and 18months)0 -
I dont mind RFLs at least organise their own races (mind you they are still questionable on women only and charging a fortune for entry but thats not the issue here
) - the problem we have is when a nice club standard race is taken over by people who want to walk it in a silly costume for cancer (or whatever) - which race organisers could get over of course by imposing sensible time limits - like 2:30 for a half and 5:30 for a mara - now thats not quick by any means but requires some training for
Take the Sale 10 - I would have been near the end of the field had I finished it - I find that great to see all these really experienced runners - so I'm a begginer but they dont treat me with any less respect and you get this amazing sense of how good you can be with training in races like that. Rather than just settling for being 'good enough'. You would never get that at a charity race because the quality isnt there! There's no point entering a race if you are going to race it in my opinion - but thats why rfl dont publish results - because its a fun run not a race.
Sorry ending rant now and going away to drink coffee and do more work

Well its not really my fault! I won a place in GNR in a competition

Fleetwood I'm hoping to crack my pb (1:56 but I've only done 2 halfs to date)- say around the 1:50-1:55 mark, GNR is a week later so I am hoping to run something like 2:05 (as its hillier and I'll be tired)

tq - nobody has a problem with charities setting up their own events and doing whatever they want on the proviso that:
a) They dont take up very limited road closure provisons for 'sports' events.
b) They leave it at that and stop interfering with long standing races.
Running clubs are not about only the 'super fast', although obviously it is a competitive sport so people want to progress and do their best.
But, more importantly, clubs are about encouraging regular participation...the one thing that charities certainly arent with their 'next batch of newbies' policy.
Lets also not forget that running has got nothing whatsoever to do with donating money to charity, no more so than fencing does or volleyball. Anyone, at any time, can send a donation to their favourite charity/cause and thats how it should be....totally voluntary and, in my opinion, anonymous. Why does it need to involve running?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
