Wow, that is some fantastic running there Rich! Well done. You could be on for the sub-60 10-miler next month if you carry on improving like that.

  • Hello all! First time posting in this thread. I'm a 24yr old female and started running about a year ago. I was a bit overweight back then and (very reluctantly) started running on the treadmill for 5-10mins a few times a week. I used to hate exercise but I've slowly grown to actually enjoy running. My progression has been quite slow, but I'm finally in training for my first 10K in a few weeks time. I usually run 5k 3 or 4 times a week. It almost puts me to shame reading some of your distances in this thread, but I'm looking forward to reading everyone's experiences and learning more about becoming a 'proper' runner :)

Hi miss_cupcake - welcome the thread!

Rachel - sounds like some good targets there. And I couldn't help but :rotfl: at your comment about following the other jogger. Good luck with the longer route.

Rich - fantastic running today :D Could feel the enthusiasm leaping from the page as I was reading that post!

UK - good luck for the half tomorrow - looking forward to the report.

The official results for my 5 miler have now been posted - I got 00:47:41 and was placed 246 out of 315 finishers.

WELL DONE RICH (sorry for shouting) - OMG that 75% is getting closer...

Some nice runner Tirlittan aswell :D Good luck with next week too :D

Good luck UK - hope it goes well for you today in sunny Essex

Krider - well done on you race results - thats a great time - I hope you are pleased with your efforts :D

Welcome to Miss_Cupcake - if you are training for a 10k and are already running 5k happily then there's not too much work to do - just take one of your runs every week that you have the most time for and gradually extend the distance - dont worry about times and run as slowly as possible till your running 10k and beyond - good luck and if you need anymore specific advice come back and ask :D

Rachel - it sounds like you need a running buddy to help you keep pace till you get the hang of it but well done on the run and the long walks :D

I'm away this weekend at my sisters wedding but am looking forward to trying out a run on Tuesday for the first timein six weeks - am going to stay in my garden so I can stop whenever - 4 laps is 1.25 of a mile so nothing to strenuous perhaps 12-16 laps to get me to 4 miles ish - I wont time it but I will be watching HR which for me has been a very good indicator of whether I am fit enough run, hopefully the outlook will be good :D

    Happy running all!

    Morning all

Not been able to check in this week, as it's been heavy going (workwise and personally)
Anyway, managed to get out twice before work (6am ) and did a 25min and 35min (haven't had chance to map the milage)

This morning, I did my 5.8mile route in 63mins. Bit gutted about the time but 3 miles of that is uphill!(excuses, excuses :D) My hayfever/sport-induced ashtma has kicked in this week too, just in time for my 10K next Sunday
Ah well, you guys keep me inspired! Am going to enter the Idle Trail 10k too. That was my first one last year - 67mins :o, so I want to improve on that!

Well done on the weight loss Rachel! You'll have to let me in on your secret!
Have a great time at your sister's wedding Becky - looks like it's gonna be a nice day too!
Enjoy sunny Southend UK, my in-laws live there, so I know it well!
Miss_Cupcake - don't be put to shame! 5K is 5K and 3/4 times a week will be doing you good!
I personally have no ambition to run further than 10K - each to their own! Good Luck!

Have a good day everyone, mac

Thanks again for all the nice comments re yesterday's race - it was rather fun!:D:D

Simply - you're right using the word 'creeping' regarding the WAVA improvement - 0.5% is actually quite a big improvement. However, I'm not going to cheat and use parkrun's own age gradings (they gave me 73.96% yesterday instead of the 72.95% I used on here) - the reason for the difference is that their base year for the world records is older.

Rachel - Leave those poor male runners alone!;)

UK & Scorgeous - good luck with today's races, even if its hot be careful with the drinking. There is little need for any drinking at all in either a 10K or half marathon, other than the odd sip of water maybe. Drinking too much, on the other hand can have a big effect in hot weather - too much water will dilute the essential salts, especially sodium, and isotonic sports drinks dont really have much time to take effect although are great for replenishment afterwards.

Chickadee - Thanks for that although I think the 59:59 is probably a bit off the radar still. It would require about a 15secs/mile improvement over the next month to run that time on a flat course, which might be just about doable, but Eccup isn't flat so it is probably just going to be a bit out of reach. However, by having a good crack at it should lead to a decent time anyway - as a best guess at the moment I'd say in the range 1:01:30 - 1:02:00.

UK - I have to say that it is that aspect of club running that is just plain silly. I know it sounds like a bit of fun with everyone chipping in to 'help the team' etc but over the years it is exactly this kind of thing that leads to an astronomical number of injuries. Twisted ankles in the long jump, pulled shoulders in the shot putt, pulled back muscles in the high jump and my very own damaged shins in the 3000m steeplechase (I still have small pieces of missing bone in each shin as a result:o). Its inevitable really when you're getting involved in things you have no training or preparation for.

    Go carefully.........

Miss Cup_cake - Welcome along. It sounds like you're doing just fine. Regularity is the key and you seem to be doing pretty well in that department.:D

Becky - Enjoy the wedding tomorrow. You'll be a runner again soon - bet you cant wait!!:D

Any new races that need adding/amending - let me know and I'll make the necessary changes!

    Black = Completed Races.
    Blue = Planned Races.

The blue figures next to the results are the WAVA age grading percentage followed by the relevant world record to which the time is being compared.

With age grading everyone is on an equal footing - the score takes out any advantage/disadvantage due to age and any advantage/disadvantage due to being male/female.

So whatever your age or sex if you score 52% it is better than another person's 51% regardless of their age/sex.

So what are the scores? They are quite simply a measure of your performance compared to the person who holds the world record for that distance in your age group and of your gender.

Clearly some of the WRs are out of date, but there has to be a stable basis on which to calculate otherwise the gradings would need to be re-computed every time a WR changes.

So, in simple terms your WAVA rating is:

Your time is 4 x World Record 25.00%
Your time is 2 x World Record 50.00%
Your time is 1.5 x World Record 66.67%
Your time is 1.25 x World Record 80.00%
