Oh so I was right then about the shins - got a questions for you though - when does aching shins become shin splints?? Or are they one and the same in which case why are people advised to stop running when they have them (my friend has just been diagnosed this week - I recommended more walking to build the muscles)...
I suffered shin splints when I started out - just a dull aching in the shins...never really bothered me when running, but was a bit of a pest the rest of the time. Then I was ill once, had 2 weeks off running and have been fine since. Think rest's the solution, then - although I've little doubt that walking's the way forward in terms of prevention.0 -

Shins ache because the muscle is growing. When you are approx 1.5-2 miles into a run it will just about have reached its maximum size as the blood pumps around the shin.
.
Does this happen with calf muscles as well? my left calf has constantly ached for 2-3 weeks suddenly its stopped this week. I must stress ached not hurt/pain.
Welcome to the thread new peeps.
glad to see all the progress thats being made by everyone. I actually read this thread everyday its just that im a pro lurker:staradmin5k - 00:27:46:staradmin 10k - 00:57.03:staradminHalf - 02:01:15:staradmin5M - 00:44:07:staradmin0 -
Rich, I know you are right, but why is it that walking 6 miles drops the body weight faster than running it? Is it because once you can run 6 miles your fitness has improved so your body is more efficient? All seems a little unfair?! ha ha!0

Your heart rate will be elevated for longer, for one thing...0

But surely your heart rate is much higher running than walking? Even if the walk takes longer..........0

Unfair? Have you not heard of energy efficiency?:p:p
It seems that a lot of people take up running wishing for an ineffecient body - ie one which burns fuel hand over fist. Its like wishing for a car that does 5mpg or a central heating system that costs £5k per year to run.....it costs a lot of money to fuel a high mileage running body, so far better to have an efficient one.
Walking is less intensive and therefore there is a higher percentage of fat in the fat/glycogen mix compared to running. It is the burning of glycogen which leads to hunger and the need to replace quickly.
Think of glycogen as petrol/diesel and fat as unnecessary bodywork trim on a car....the bodywork trim is just deadweight and doesnt need replacing.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

No, its not quite the same thing.
The shin tends to expand in width under workload whereas the calf is stretched lengthways.
The ache is moe likely to be linked to the connective tissues being stretched a bit beyond their normal comfort zone.
But its another example of why the body needs to be treated gently when starting to run. Too much, too quickly is just asking for lower leg injuries. And binge runners are worse because they keep coming back to running thinking they can just pick up where they left off and subsequently doing all sorts of damage.
Steady consistency wins every time.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
