Thanks for the excellent advice - I will start by dressing comfortably for our dog walk today and running short sections of it. And will see what 5k runs are coming up - how long do you think is realistic to build up to 5k from nothing?

Oops - crossed over with Becky! Will build up the walking first. That should be easy if I can keep the dog from stopping and starting!

Dogs will happily do what you do - if it stops you carry on, he/she will soon get the idea that stops need to be brief!:p

Walking is far more beneficial than running if starting out from a base of being overweight and/or not physically active for some time.

No running until within 1.5 - 2 stone of 'ideal' weight otherwise the shock to knees/ankles/hips and the connective tissues is just too risky. Walking will strengthen all these areas without the associated damage involved with the silly run/walk programmes.

How much walking? In the region of 200 miles over 8/10 weeks is about right to prepare your body to be able to be introduced to running.

    Good luck...and take it easy!:D

Oh so I was right then about the shins - got a questions for you though - when does aching shins become shin splints?? Or are they one and the same in which case why are people advised to stop running when they have them (my friend has just been diagnosed this week - I recommended more walking to build the muscles)...

The term 'shin splints' is used to refer to any generally painful condition in the shins.

If the situation occurs due to hard activity it generally isnt a problem, the tightness in the shin and the resulting pain is due to restricted blood flow and trapping of nerves. It is just a temporary training problem. However, a solid base of walking before taking up running should negate any such problems.

However, if this same condition appears in the general public whilst just doing normal activity then it becomes a medical problem known as Chronic Compartment Syndrome. It is the same thing but not as easily sorted out!

Ok - will up my current stop-start strolling with the dog to more sustained walking to begin. Reckon am about 3stone over ideal weight :o (scales are broken!) so will build this up gradually. Currently do a mile or two gentle walking a day so will aim to up this to 3 miles a day brisk walking over the next two months. Does that sound about right?

Yes. But when you get to 3 miles comfortably, keep building. 4-6 miles is ideal training distance for either running or walking. The main difference being that weight falls off much more quickly through doing 6 mile walks than through 6 mile runs!

    Time permitting, of course!

Hi guys - so glad we've addressed the run/walk thing again - note to all newbies, speaking from experience, run/walk nearly had me give up, I walked off 5 stone, and there aren't many people who can keep up with me walking now - but running - start sloooowwww, go for as long as you can, walk the rest, gradually your run bit will get longer - I now run at leaset 3 miles a day with no problem.

The shins thing makes sense, I've just upped to 4.4 miles - gradually, shins aren't terribly painful, dull ache. Anyway, was a bit achey, so took yesterday off running, but MUST get out today! Then I have 4 weeks off work so - run run run!!!

Are there any good sites with a best plan on how to make the most of this time? I want to progress as best I can over my time off, but don't want to do myself in - which I'm sure I could quite easily do at the moment!

Good luck to all the newbies - and remember, don't run/walk - it's cruel! But run so slow you feel silly! Then it'll all come to you.
