Theres nothing that smokers hate more than a reformed smoker because its another excuse out of the window for not giving up.
Its just the weight equivalent that you're experiencing. Who's accusing you of being 'fattist' anyway...and why?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

HAHAHA 'fatist'
I had this come through this morning on my newswire (its US research but still ):

And where the US lead the UK will surely follow!
If fatties are going to consume 42% more health costs through laziness and stuuffing piles of food down ....then they have a lot to answer for!
Its interesting how the obese always have a health problem to blame for the obesity but none of them have health problems due to letting themselves get obese. Obviously, some obesity is due to genuine medical conditions but I would hazard a guess that its not 100%!:rolleyes:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hadn't planned any build up races - should I be trying to? what distances would you recommend? and how many? sorry so many questions- still class myself as a beginner and am still trying to find my way.
Trying not to think too much about time (goal is to finish- and not to walk any) But I guess anything below 4.5 hours would be nice.(Family of 5: 2 adults & 3 children aged 7yrs, 4yrs, and 18months)0 -

Agh makes me so cross (I used to be overweight- no excuses I was lazy and ate too much of the wrong things). Not helped by doctors though (sorry don't mean to offend) but my mum works for a government healthy living project which offers free diet and lifestyle courses for people with bmi 30+ its been a pilot project but has had fantastic results- clients have access to dieticians and fitness advisors etc- its about working within a team- the only way to access though is through doc referrals- our local docs refusing to refer though as they say its too much paperwork! (1 form at beginning of 12 weeks and 1 at end) sorry rant over(Family of 5: 2 adults & 3 children aged 7yrs, 4yrs, and 18months)0 -

tq - the answers to all those questions are very much dependent on what training you have been doing over the last few months.
To run a marathon from start to finish is a big goal that very few people, in say the London Marathon, actually achieve.
Just post a rough summary of what you've been doing in terms of long runs and weekly mileages and we should be able to point you in the right direction.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Ah, Rich - you're as bad as me! I guess I do mutter things like 'he ate all the pies' and 'if they lost some weight they'd get across the road quicker', but mostly I complain about menu choices in our staff canteen - when we're supposed to be promoting health, and our staffs insistence on claiming for taxis for ridiculously short distances that are easily walkable, and we have a starbucks in our building, selling mega fat and calorific drinks. Cost, health and environment affected.
Whilst we're complaining, I've lost 6 1/2 stone, have one small area of problem skin, no stretch marks no saggy arms, 'cos I've worked with weights and totally changed my diet - low cholesterol, low blood pressure, low blood sugar. But I can't have this one bit of skin sorted. I know, I'll get fat again, have a gastric band on the NHS, which automatically entitles you to all the plastic surgery you need, oh and the cost of drugs for life - eh - so flippin' stupid!
Rant over - normal cheery service resumed! ha ha!0 -
Been following a programme in a book called marathon from start to finish by Sam Murphy- its a 16 week programme, it follows 3weeks hard 1 week light. 2 or 3 runs in week varying from 20mins to 1hr incorporating hills, threshold, fartlek and then interval runs- then a longer run at weekends I'm up to 11miles- this increases weekly by 1-2 miles. Last week i ran approx 25miles.
any advice would be very welcome :-)(Family of 5: 2 adults & 3 children aged 7yrs, 4yrs, and 18months)0 -
Oh TQ16, I'm tired just reading the programme you're following!0

I don't know why but I imagine everyone on this thread to be slim, trim running MACHINES! Sadly I am none of these things, but hey, atleast I'm giving it a good go! I have a running route I particularly enjoy because it takes me right past the front of a KFC carpark and there are always loads of overweight ppl sitting in their cars stuffing their faces with that rubbish. I dunno why, I just get a rush knowing that that is the complete opposite of who I am! (This probably makes me really a bad person, oops!)0

Im definatly not one of the trim running machines, i can say that i hate it when people say that i think your crazy for wanting to run??? Why because i want to stay fit and not get fat.
tq16, if your doing that sort of training you should be fine, thats similar to the program that im following and i should be oncourse to get around in 4-4.30 hrs in september. just keep up the good work and the time will just creep closer to 4 hrs quicker than you think it will.Running Club5KM - 25:20(51.21%) 10KM - 53:40(50.26%)1/2 Marathon - 2.14.57(44.20%)Marathon 5:11:00 (40.78%)0
