I never got out last night as I was working late!!

Hopefully get out tonight for my new run which I did on Tuesday evening
6.3 miler(59.57 min) really chuffed with this time!!!!

I know Rich & Becky will state not to worry about the time when attempting longer/newer routes but its hard not too!!

I am now hoping to do my 10k in September within the hour maybe around
    55-57 mins??

If you can keep the training consistent E.C I would expect you to be a little faster than that by September :D:D

Good luck with the run tonight :D

Yeah, if you're doing around 58 something now, I'd expect you to be closer to 55 than 57 come September, fo shizzle (as the kids say :))

Dont knock training with GF - Rich is wayyyyy faster than me but the bits I run with him are great warm ups for the rest of his runs :D:D

That 'bit' was 8.5 miles last Sunday and has been up to 20 miles.

So much of the benefit of a run is unrelated to speed that it really doesn't matter - a week's training should include a whole range of different speeds anyway.

But it is only this little period during the recovery that the paces are slower - it will soon get back to me saying 'slow down - this is too quick'.:D:p

Yep thats why i started out with her I figured she would stop me going out to fast, however she was supposed to run to a point and back but stopped at the point. When i got back she said she had a stitch and I said girl your running to fast :rolleyes2. Her current aim is to run for 20mins (who knows the running bug might get her) I did tell her once she stopped dont run again just walk back home.

I like the way becky's bit is 8.5m :rotfl:

Well, my time was 28:46 :rotfl: Doesn't tell me much about my performance, though! Can see myself going to Battersea park one evening to have a crack at the clear course! Was feeling a little bit cheated, didn't feel like I'd just run a race by the finish.

The men averaged 28:59 in my team, so I just about made the cut! The women averaged 35:14, with the total team average 30:55. Not sure how our team compares to others, but everyone seems to have missed their targets somewhat.

I still enjoyed the run. We got a free t-shirt and there was free booze and a BBQ in our marquee afterwards, which was nice. If you ever do it, treat it as a fun run and you'll have a good time. Forget about your time unless you make it to the very front.

Dont worry BT - you know you can do better and you still beat the team avg :D:D

E.C considering I ran a marathon in April - 8.5 miles is a bit to me...but when I started I couldnt even run to the end of the street so your GF is ahead of me ;)

To be fair you can get all the benefits of a race most evenings in Battersea because there are runners all the way round - so theres always someone to 'chase down'.

And the long straight bit along the Thames is fast, although I dont think Becky likes it!

The surface is nobbly and its always wind in face, plus you have to weave around children - I like the back bits better and you get parrotts there :D

    Its a great park though!!!

I liked the fast bit along the Thames. It was also a part I was able to get to the outside and pass loads of people. Unfortunately, there was a dead end immediately after, where we all shuffled through a tightening tight turn at a snails pace for about a minute!

I'm back and the results are already available  Quite tired this morning, more so than after my 5 miler, and the evening run (of a longer distance) last week. Tired limbs too - but I'll shake that out with a restorative gentle outing at lunchtime.

I'd call the race flat despite the event information warning about a few elevations. Far flatter than my home/work routes anyway! Though there was a lot of areas that were uneven underfoot. Despite the recent rain the course was quite dry, but running it actually in the rain might require trail shoes IMHO. The route was not quite as drawn on the map on the website though mostly it was the same. The start/finish was slightly different but in that same area, and the drinks were where finish is marked on the map - this was run through twice at about 4.5k and about 200m from the finish. The area in the woodland (5.5k to 7k) was very uneven underfoot but the only warning about this sort of think was on the top straight of the course circa the 3k and 8.5k mark to the start/finish area (also uneven). I found by about 8k my legs and weaker ankle (top tip - don't fall off when climbing - dislocations hurt!) were feeling it from the constant variability of what I was landing on. Also the brown marked paths were almost all trails in the grass which was tufted and uneven (and had animal dung ;)) unless you were able to run in the 18 inch or so width of trodden down area which visitors to the park must have made. The area is used for grazing some of the time by the looks of the ground as well (and nearby penned in calves) so lots of divots. Overtaking was therefore a spurt of pace and a step (pun intended :p) into the unknown.

I had the garmin in miles (despite it being a km race) as that is what I know and can watch my pace on. This tracked at 6.32 miles (and on the whole it has been very accurate) so shows I was having to detour around people quite a bit. The garmin time was also between my gun and chip time which I'd expect as I started it a bit before the start line. Consistently run race for me, though I was overtaken (as usual) by lots of people in the first 2k, who I then started to reel in from then on in which counts for some very odd pacing by some people! Latched onto a tallish chap for the first 6 or 7k as well which helped. Irked by a few pairs walking from about 4k onwards. Fine walk if you need to but don't take up much/all of narrow paths having a chat; and these were not encouraging keep going chats - they sounded far more like gossiping. And it wasn't all women beer tins - though mostly...

My pace was pretty consistent throughout (with a major effort to keep it slow in the first mile as people surged past me):
    9:50, 9:37, 9:39, 9:34, 9:36, 9:30, 8:47 (.32 of a mile)
(This was after a 1.4 mile warmup with an average pace of 10:47/mile.) This equates to 6.32m in 1:00:36 (9:35/mile) from the garmin for the race. I was placed 308 out of 439 finishers (from 450 starters I think the announcer called out as we heading out over the first k). Gun time: 1:00:53, Chip time: 1:00:29. Time range across all finishers: 35:44 to 1:22:06 (fastest lady was 42:06).

The end had a very welcome supply of Lucozade which wasn't mentioned in the race pack or on the web site. Also there was a range of their products there to choose from so I was able to grab one of the hydration ones rather than fuel ones as I find those easier to drink down rather than sip. And I was quite thirsty by then. The water provided midway was in plastic cups with a bin for cups only about 50m away so I managed a couple of gulps of that at most cos I refused to walk ;) Was all I really needed though as the temperature was quite nice and no humidity.

There were medals handed out just past the finish line, just before the chip was cut off your shoe. Then there was a bag with some leaflets from Against Breast Cancer, and David Lloyd (announcer mentioned a day pass but I don't see one - I could be brazen as it is the gym nearest to work anyway...), and a teeny tiny sample from Buzz bars. The Lucozade/water was down to choice so you picked that up, and a mars bar though very few of those left when I got there. Oh and a pen from the charity. Happy with Lucozade, mars bar and medal :)

The race village consisted of a stand for the main charity (Against Breast Cancer), stands for some of the sponsers, some people offering massage, a burger van, and Lucozade. Went to talk to the latter of these after the race (acting all innocent about their products) and got a 20% code for their website and the option to take some samples. Got a recovery bar and powdered version of their fuel drink. At which point he emphasised having the recovery bar after a race like this and gave me another one. Did I look completely done in I wonder? :D Ate one in the car just before heading home so put it to good use anyway.

I did consider having a massage on the legs (minimum £5 donation to the charity for 20 mins so quite MSE and I've never had one) but I waited for about 5 mins and there were still two people in front of me and I was getting cold (yeah in this summer!), tired, and still needed to drive home, shower, eat, be up for work, etc.! I also didn't have anything from the burger van - looked to be donation based for the charity again. Felt a bit sorry for them as before the race the runners obviously didn't bother, and most didn't afterwards. I know I couldn't face something like that till I'd had more liquid and cooled down. No idea how much the spectators made use of it during the hour I was running of course. Still it was a really nice touch and if the OH had had time to come along he said he would have used it so thumbs up for the organisers on that.

The announcer was quite a comedian - liked that :) The queues for the toilet after about 18:50 (race time 19:30) were horrendous! Thankfully I went as soon as I arrived in a queue of four or five! There was also an official warmup run by people from the gym. Which to be honest was poorly supported - about 20 or 30 joined it. But it was an aerobics class! I'd done my run warmup and others were doing the same. And 1/3 race was queuing for the loos :p

It was a good race and one I'd consider doing again but I might reconsider my footwear, though trail running shoes are not always more supportive around the ankle anyway. Would have liked to just duck under the hour mark but it is still a PB and just as part of a training plan so no taper - and I overhead the chap who finished 4th talking to someone he knew saying he (a) did mostly triathlons now and (b) thought it was a slow course so... :) Consistency of pace very pleasing too as I've never managed that for so long a distance in training.

Total for the week = 13.7 miles (inc. WU).

Off on a tangent, loads of people with headphones tonight - but then they missed the sound of the Thames, the birds, the (irksome) buzzing things, ...! :p

Congrats to becky, evab, Simply, rich, Chickadee, and bank_of_slate on their runs. Nothing wrong with a 2 minute bank_of_slate improvement on a run - it's good (as has been said)! And the race sounds good fun beer tins, if more of a fun event than a race as you say.

(Sorry for long post - hope it's useful to anyone considering the event in future)
