  • I was 18 when I applied for a MacBook Pro (I am 19 now). It wasn't a cheap MacBook either. Was about £2000 all together that I would be paying back over two years. I have two phone contracts and two credit cards. One credit card has been settled now. I got accepted so I wouldn't say that Barclays are strict with finance. I have never missed a payment on anything though.

Sorry to drag up an old thread with a first post.

Have been looking at a mac for a while, since my old laptop decided it didn't want to work anymore, spotted on Monday that Apple offer 0% finance for 12months, got the cash to pay for it outright but £83/month just feels better £999 in one whallop, jump forward, this morning I decided to go for it and applied online. 25 minutes later "Sorry" with note suggesting checking my experian credit rating. £14.99 later it turns out my credit rating is good (I'm not on the electoral role at my new address yet), put in a call to the number given on the first email I got this morning no concrete response to why I was declined but offered that I should re-apply and be very careful with what I put on the application.

So I did, this time over the phone, very carefully made sure everything was correct and I repeated everything I said and the guy on the other end also repeated 25 minutes later the phone rings and it's Barclays with some follow up questions which obviously I answered correctly (they did ask about my credit card limit - I don't have a credit card). Then 10 minutes later email pings "Sorry"! I've never had credit refused before and I've never missed a payment on anything I've borrowed, can't work this one out!

Oh well saved me £1000 on machine I probably won't get the full use of anyway!

I've heard you can speak to the staff and ask if they can ring it through with student discount if you're nice enough.
Or ask if you can offer them a corporate discount, a lot of big places partner with them : banks, technology companies...

They care about customer satisfaction and aren't based on commission like other electrical retailers.

    Hope that helps.
