I know, and nurse's pay is appalling in my eyes. I can speak up for my husband because I actually feel he earns every penny of his wage despite what some might think because I see it every day but I do appreciate how frustrating it might be to do such a worth while job and it not be reflected in your salary. Compared to you, I would be one of those people who are vastly overpaid for what they do (I use my brain a lot but that's really not that hard! :rotfl:) and whilst I don't try to justify it, I don't apologise for it either. I worked hard, got the right grades, got onto a good grad scheme and have also been a bit lucky if brutally honest! Like you say, we all make choices.snapping_crocodile wrote: »I have to put up with all those things your husband does as a nurse, unsocial hours, bank holidays (and we don't get Christmas day off), angry and aggressive patients and families (and i'm a children's nurse ), late and early starts/finishes/night shifts...and i am paid far less than this  So the pay someone receives is not always a reflectiob of what their work entails.....however on the other hand most people chose the profession/job they go into, and thus should take the rough with the smooth....not that i think anyone should have to put up with aggressive patients/families/customers full stop, but thats another story0

I've read this thread before, but don't think I posted mine. First job at 18 was 17k. best pay was 24k at 22.
I'm now self employed and it's too early to state a figure0 -
If you work full time for a UK bank or any UK company, it would not be legal for you to have less than 20 days holiday. It is illegal for any employer not to give you holidays and/or not pay you for them.Could be the op is saying s/he is on a zero hour contract? In the NHS the term was "bank staff" we got paid only for what we worked with no holidays/sick pay etc
So should they have received some holiday pay? If so, should I advise them to write to the ex employer?0 -

I'm 27, Secretary in Wealth Management company and I earn £28k (in Central London).
Benefits are the usual - pension, life insurance, travel insurance, private medical (although the excess is £300 so I'd never be able to use this!), discretionary bonus in February (I'm not getting one this year though) and 25 days holiday.0 -
Thought i'd update mine...
27, work as an administrative assistant (basically im a general skivvi) and do everything from filing to organising meetings and booking accommodation. Im on £14,500 plus £20 a month as im first aid trained and i have to work 167 hours a month so my day to day hours vary. I get 24 days holiday a yr and basically no other benefits.
I'd love more than anything to complete a degree that will help me get a better paid job (prob business management, already have HND in computers) but I dont have enough to pay my debts off on my wage never mind add the cost of a uni course.
At 27 i feel like im fighting a loosing battle.......Time to get things sorted once and for all......0 -

I was originally taken on with the NHS as bank staff. I often worked over 40 hours a week and i used to recieve 1hrs pay (holiday) for every 12 hours that I worked. I started by gettin this in a lump sum when it worked out at around £200 on top of my wage but then my boss would just work it out at the end of every month.0 -
Night club bar staff, I'm 19
Currently no wage, as I'm not getting any hours. But normally, £6/h on a Friday/Saturday, which includes 50p/h unsocial hours pay.
Hoping to change to something that pays or get a secondary job atm though because I can't live on nothing...£2023 in 2023 challenge - £17.79 January0
