I teach photoshop and numeracy to adult learners in a prison, and earn £21 an hour for 9.25 hours a week. Though the planning and prep is supposed to be part of that hourly rate. Still, I get a bit of cover work too, and after tax I bring in about £75O to 8OO a month. If I take holiday I don't get paid though.
I also do some web stuff: just half an hour a week, routine maintenance, and currently earn $25 a month. Yes, dollars, straight into my paypal so that gets blown on Ebay.
I do editing and proofreading (of, *cough*, alternative erotica} and earn a percentage of the royalties. That's maybe $5 to $1O a month at the moment. So not "worth" it but fun to do, and it's a foot in the door of proofreading as two other presses have asked me to do bits and pieces for them. (NOTE to budding proofreaders: those courses you see are not worth it! It's a hard business to get into!}
I also work as a private tutor, to five Polish adults and one year 6 boy who is underconfident in Maths. To my adults I charge £15 and the boy is £2O. As my adults sometimes cancel I average about £3OO to £35O a month with this.
And finally I'm an artist and I do pet portraits and tattoo designs. I charge peanuts as I do it for friends, about £15 a go. I do consistently make £3O a month though, and it's fun. It's also building up my portfolio of proper paid commissions.
I find it pretty hard to reply when people say "What do you do for a living?" Just answering "teacher" really doesn't cover it!0 -
30 years old, recruitment consultant and on a basic of £12,000. Currently earning £12,000  and have been since the end of 2008 when the economy took a turn for the worse.
Pre 2008 I was earning closer to £40,000+, but it will be a long time before we get to that stage again.
I've been with my company 4 years and have no benefits apart from 24 days holiday. Have had no pay rise in 4 years and not likely to get one because of the way things are.

Greetings all, i haven't posted on this site for ages but felt obliged to
because i have decisions to make. I am currently working at a well known
supermarket (as advertised by nick hancock) on nights earning between
£16,000 and £17,000 gross, i have worked there since 1989 (aged 16)
when it was another well known supermarket. In between i tried out for
the royal marines and got in but left after a while, completed a leisure
management degree (1995) and then a teaching degree in 2003, i then
worked as a teacher completing my nqt training in 2006. In between
finishing my teaching degree and now we have had two children, moved
into a council house and we are now settled. The teaching job finished
because the contract was temporary and was not renewed, therefore i
returned to the supermarket where i have been for last three to four
years.
The decision i need help with is whether i should go for promotion on
nights which could be a possibility or should i tread the teaching path
which is ultimately more rewarding. I have been helping out at my
daughters forest school on wednesday's since october just to put
something on my c.v to show that i am still interested in teaching.
The night job will mean a switch to five nights instead of four for more
money but it will mean that i wont be able to do forest school anymore
which won't look good should any teaching jobs arise.
Any advice from anybody that reads this would be greatly appreciated, i'm not after sympathy just the benefit of anybodys experience should they have been in this situation.
Cheers coxy10720 -
I'd think you could get part-time teaching work 3-4 days a week and earn the same, if not more, than you may do at the supermarket? But then, I don't know how you're set up for teaching work wherever you are. Remember: you could also tutor privately. There are quite a lot of options if you are a qualified teacher.
This is an interesting thread.
Just to add that I was a full-time teacher, 3 years ago, earning just under £34,000 p/a (inner London), which is a bloody fortune! Am now healthier and happier in many ways, but struggling on just under £10,000 a year (clearly NOT in London any more!)and trying to take it one day at a time!0 -
I'm 22, on the borders of West London/Middlesex/Berkshire, just changing jobs, old job which I didn't enjoy was:
Administrator - Aviation/logistics - 20 days holiday plus bank holidays, no other benefits - £20k per year.
My new job which is a complete career change into the NHS is:
Speech and language therapy assistant - West London hospital - 28 days holiday plus bank holidays, pension and all the other NHS benefits - £18.5K per year.
I've taken a slight pay cut to do a job which I think I'll enjoy more and will be saving a hefty chunk of that so I can put it towards going to university this year or next to study to be a full qualified speech and language therapist!0 -
I work in network marketing and earn between £250 and £500 per month but only work 7 hours a week at the moment. Plan to be earning a whole lot more by the end of the year! My upline works about 15 hours a week and earns over 4K per month so I am planning to follow suit! If anyone fancies a bit more money every month and wants to look at what I do in more detail then feel free to get in touch.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

I agree with kattyskatty, I was a fulltime teacher in the South of England for 35 years earning a good salary. I made the radical move to a small Scottish island in 2001, and now earn around £12000, but life has so much more quality, and the air is wonderful, and there are few shops and no Macdonalds/cinemas within 80 miles, so community entertainment is the thing - and largely free!
PS I also brought my (then) 78 year old parents with me, as I am an only child, so it was not a whim, but much thought about. I left my married daughter in the South, but it won't be that long before the call of sanity brings her and the grandchildren to their senses, and she gives up the endlessly long teaching hours, the rush hour, the cost of housing/childcare......... and joins us here in this paradise. Little income - Large happiness. Parva domus, magna quies. (Poor house, Great peace)0 -

No, the government is too generous with taxpayers money. No wonder the country is going to the dogs.0 -
