Thanks for the info everyone! :)

I've just received a book (left down the side alley with an incorrect name)

    Just sent them this e-mail:

    Hi,

    Membership # 0342863089

I've just received a book and a box of junk mail from you.

I did not request this book and have at no time registered or entered
into any contract with your company.

I would be pleased if you could inform me how you came to have my
address on your system (with an incorrect house holders name btw).

I gather i'm not the only person who has had these problem with you.

I insist that you remove all my information from your database (and
    any backups).

Under the Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1971, (as amended) it is
an offence to demand payment for goods known to be unsolicited, in
other words, they were sent to a person without any prior request made
by them or on their behalf.

The said book will be going to a charity shop.

    Thanks - Mark

Thanks to FM violetta for pointing me in the direction of this thread.
  • Hi All,
Has anyone received a return label yet? if so would it be possible to scan and post it here so we can all have one?

Incidentally My package arrived with a variarion/mis-spelling of my name that I had used to get Mobile Phone Sim Cards, I really don't think I used it more than once. I still have the envelope that the sims arrived in, PO Box 3342, Marlow, Bucks, SL7 1UZ. BUT I could be mistaken. I would prefer to return the package as I don't like conflict much, I am not likely to read the book either. Best Wishes to all on MSE Keep fighting

I got an email a while back which I deleted as junk

What is the best course of action?

  • I got one of these parcels a couple of weeks ago - immediately phoned up and complained to customer services who were charm personified! Sent a returns label within a week and I sent it back.
When they suggested I had 'inadvertently clicked' on one of their promotional pop-ups, I informed them that I am not that careless!:p
I did wonder whether the details may have been sold on from one of the Pigsback competition links which I have recently completed. (Not that I've won a bean!!!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: !!!)
Hope you all get sorted soon with the same courtesy!

This is the same company under the guise of Fantasy and SF Book Club that my OH recieved a pack of books for £1.49 - UNSOLICITED!

He remembers talking to someone in another Forum (War of the Worlds one - yes I know, but each to their own!) about this particular book, but it has to be a coincidence as there is no way they would be able to get his name and address? Would there?

Off to bang off a really rude email and a complaint too.

I suspect the mutual points wesite which I visited recently and also buymeaticket website (or something like that) for passing my details on. Not sure though.

I have registered with these sites too - it is bad practice and ought to be stopped if this is the case

    Oh My!

The back of my invoice states "Pay for your introductory parcel and activate your membership today!"

This company KNOWS these goods are unsolicited. But are tricking you into paying and inadvertantly signing up! Once your a member, you have to buy 1 full priced book for a minimum of 4 magazines (1 per month). How many people are going to be conned into doing this??

I am writing an email to Trading Standards and Watchdog too.

My OH typed in the book clubs address and found a marketing site that sells address and their prices

Very suss, so not surprised we have been got thro' innocently signing up on other sites.

    Guys,

I received my 99p introductory book and demand for money with menaces. I've figured out how they got my name and address and I'm all ready fired up for a war.

I chased some free referral points on a popular referrals website. That led to a company called PrimeQ who collect names and addys to sell on. As part of sign up you go through four stages:- 1. Give name and address - 2. Tick or don't tick some boxes to sign up for various schemes such as book clubs. - 3. Skip or sign up on some affiliate sites and finally - 4. Select at least 2 of about twenty no obligation free trials.
At no point did I elect to join any book club.
However PrimeQ are well within their terms to sell your details to anyone they wish, and so Mang Book club had my name and addy. What Mango are doing is wholly ilegal and speculative blackmail. I urge anyone receiving one of their sh1tty books to contact me personally with a view to fighting back.
I've already had action taken to break the association between that referral site and PrimeQ. I've also done some research and contacted a journalist with a view to following up.
Naturally I've contacted Mango directly and assertively telling them NOOooo. To hell with their profit making phone system, They don't get my money so easily.
So when your book arrives I'd be happy to hear from you.

Sadly I spelt my name very wrong on PrimeQ's site.:j

How did you contact them without going thro rip off 0870?
