I too got a letter informing me of my "Membership" of Mango and I have just sent the following email to customer services, the mail bounced and I resent it via their postmaster. I do not know the legality of telling them that I will asume they are engaging my consultancy service but it cannot be anymore dodgy than their unsolicited subscrition to me. I would be v interested in what others may think....

    email to Mango follows...

I'm sorry I do not know who you are I do not want to be a member of your book club. I did not request membership in your book club. You have assigned me membership number xxxxxxxx.

I do not want your product or any of the books you appear to be planning to send me. Any product you do send will be assumed by me to be a request to review and comment on your services on a consultancy basis for which I will charge you the sum of £500 per day or part thereof. If you wish to engage my services as a commentator on consumer offerings then send away.

I do not undertake to return any materials sent to me or delivered to me by you, you do so entirely at your own risk and any previous electronic communication that you take to be a request for membership or subscription that you have assumed to be a request for such services sent on my behalf previously is rescinded, revoked and otherwise withdrawn.

    Sincerely

    xxxxxxxxxx

I like your idea. I have in the past sent a simular letter saying that I would be charging for storage of the items that they had sent to me for sake keeping. However, I think that I like the idea of book review better. I could have a flick through and send a reply saying "The book was cr*p". From previous posts, it seems that the books Mango are sending out generally seem to be :)

  • As per my reply the the thread on page 5
First of all please make sure you read this web site
    http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/buyi...ted/index.html

I also got a book today at first, i thought i had won a prize, But noooo it was a book I hade never requested from 'Mango' after reading all the reply's on this thread, I sent this email (see below). So thankyou everyone for their advice and thank youuuuu MANGO for my nice new FREE book.

    Hi,
    Membership # *********
I've just received a book and a box of junk mail from you.
I did not request this book and have at no time registered or entered
into any contract with your company. (so do not say I have, or that anyone else may have on my behalf/with ut my consent. I have heard every line of bull!!!! you can come up with).
I will class any more letters demanding money you are NOT owed as bulling and harassment.
I would be pleased if you could inform me how you came to have my
address on your system. Please do not insult me by saying "I must have clicked on a pop up" I have a very good pop up blocker that doesn't let any through. Also you could not have got my name and address by just clicking on a 'pop up'.
I gather I'm not the only person who has had these problem with you.
I insist that you remove all my information from your database and cancel my membership immediately (and
    any backups).
"Under the Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1971, (as amended) it is an offence to demand payment for goods known to be unsolicited, in other words, they were sent to a person without any prior request made by them or on their behalf.
Someone who receives goods in these circumstances may retain them as an unconditional gift, and does not have to pay for or return any unwanted goods. Anyone who receives a demand for payment for unsolicited goods should report the matter to their local Trading Standards Department."
The above statement was taken from the dti website.
IF YOU OR YOUR ASSOCIATES EVER CONTACT ME AGAIN WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN AN ABJECT APOLOGY, THEN I WILL TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST YOU.
    Thanks

  • Don't know whether this has been posted earlier in the thread - haven't time to look now but, in case it helps, I sent this email to
    e-support@myclubonline.co.uk
I don't know why you think I have joined your club. I am not interested and never have been interested, I don't know where you got my email or address. You have given me a membership number of xxxxxxxxx. Please cancel this immediately and DO NOT send me any more books.
Please arrange for your book to be collected within the next 10 days otherwise it will be disposed of.

IIRC, they sent me a return sticker so I had to go to the PO but apart from that it seems to have got sorted. I did get another book arrive a week or so later which may or may not have been from them, but I refused to sign for it and the courier took it away. I got the impression that she was used to it!

  • I just got an unsolicited mail from myclubonline (part of the BCA group) with a book. It asked for 2.99 payment.

I have just sent them an email asking for my details to be removed and told them I am keeping the book in accordance with DTI rules (I attached the link to the DTI page). I have also emailed the local trading standards office. Anyone receiving this sort of unscrupulous mail should do the same. If they get enough complaints, they should shut them down.

Got one of these damn parcels this morning, and i'm choking on my own rage at them. sent the following e mail.

I've just received a book and a box of junk mail from you and apparently
have a membership number of 0348355479.

I did not request this book and have at no time registered or entered
into any membership or contract contract with your company.

I would be pleased if you could inform me how you came to have my
    address on your system.

I gather i'm not the only person who has had these problem with you.

I insist that you remove all my information from your database (and
any backups) close this ficticious account and refrain from sending
any more unsolicited junk mail otherwise I will take further action
    against your company.

    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

Amazingly they have sent me another junk box out with a different "membership" number, so having not heard back from them after my above email I sent another even more strongly worded email.
I suppose the books may make some decent stocking fillers or may even give them to charity but i'm not giving a penny to this company either by paying for something I didn't join or by phoning the scumbags up.
  • Hey, so glad i found this thread, is there any way out for me?
They sent me a book Anyone out there? in September, as it had no invoice i just left it but then in the end of September/beginning of October they sent me invoices saying pay your 99p or we will refer you to a debt collector agency. So i panicked and wanted to pay the 99p to get it out of the way for once and for all so went online and in order to pay I had to activate the membership, which was now a mistake as they have dispatched 2 more damn books equalling £14.97. Is there anyway to get out of this now? i sent them an email saying please cancel my membership but they said you have accepted the contract t&cs "we hope this clarifys things" etc. I do not want to phone them up as it is an 0870 number. Please help!

The scam is that if you pay for this you are agreeing to join the club. The cost of returning the goods is small and more than the cost of the items so many people will just pay up. I've just received - rather surprisingly - a fine handbag and a chick lit book, both of which I will be using to get in touch with my feminine side.

I still haven't heard back from them after sent then 2 emails after receiving 2 boxes both with different "membership" numbers on them.
the books went to a good home and there is no chance they'll get a penny out of me. they are scam merchants and what they are doing is illegal.
