So that means you stop at the line if you can't get on? I don't think so!

Well, yes. That's what 'give way' means. surely you aren't suggesting that it is safe, or that you are within your rights, to simply barge onto the motorway?

Someone has to have right of way at a junction, which is what a slip road is. Would you rather the 'give way' lines were painted across the three lanes of the motorway instead?

But how can it be safe that when you do find a space to pull out, you're starting off from scratch? Only to find someone rear-ends you at 70? If it was a give way, there would give way signs, and no acceleration lane. There'd be no need to have such a lane, if you had to slow down again at the end! It's more like a merging lane, and doesn't have a traditional give way at the end.

A significant proportion of the UK population seem to take a pride in driving with the maximum amount of dithering, hesitant ignorance. Middle lane moronism is rampant.

In all my years of driving I have not once ever had to stop on a slip road (excepting traffic jams) to join lane 1. Never. That's probably because I possess the extremely difficult to obtain skill of being able to match my speed to the space on my offside. Only lunar astronauts and mathematical geniuses can normally do this, so I guess I'm just lucky.

Or maybe I'm exaggerating and the only people who can't do this are poor drivers who make excuses and expect everyone else to accomodate their lack of skill.
  • I still maintain that on a motorway each person should basically be giving way to each other, and the person on the motorway should change lanes if safe to do so. That's what I do.

There is something to be said for moving into lane 2 when approaching a busy on-slip. Get out of the way and let others jossle for position.

I'm always wary of joining a slip road behind a car, if there is no-one behind I tend to slow right down and let the car in front do his business.
As long as I give enough room to boot it and match my speed in time to join comfortably.

Nothing worse than being behind someone going down the slip when you have to look over your shoulder to check it's clear, only to look back in front to see the car in front bottled it and braking.

MPV's are the worse, they should be banned, get those window fitted vans off the roads, they should be banned and their license, licence, lisense, lisence, lysense, lycence, lycense, withdrawn until they accept they are van drivers!!
Only driven by Women and blokes who don't wear trousers!! Wife has told them they are having an MPV (for the kids) but vehemently insist they are a normal car driver with a pair of nuts (they aint).

We are going to run out of cars to pick on soon!!!

Do you do this if there are vehicles approaching from behind in lanes 2 and 3, thereby forcing at least one of those vehicles to slow down?

Seems to be the fashion at my local M1 junction to join the motorway at 45mph!!! Thank heavens for a decent turbo.

Im surprised no one has mentioned the n00bs who religiously stay in the right lane of a dual carridgeway.

and then when they finally realise that they have someone behind them that wants to pass, they will let you go when they reach the beginning of a hill.:mad:

    They are indeed "Special" people

My pet hate (In Northern Ireland, so probably most of you don't know it!) is where the M2 and M5 diverge. M2 is queued well back, so loads of people just fly up the M5, and then attempt to cut in just before they diverge, causing even more tail-backs! I would usually just force them out by keeping about 3 inches off the car in front! :D

I know that bit (and as an aside I hate driving in Belfast they don't seem to believe in having consistent or complete road signs, ie if you take the A20 into Belfast it will at one point turn into a T junction (near the city retail park) with no signs telling you which way to go, you have to turn left and then right in order to stay on the A20 but it doesn't tell you that.

The behaviour you describe is not unique to that junction though, happens everywhere, another common place for it is the M42 westbound at J3a where you need to keep left to stay on the M42 or right to go onto the M40. The M40 always flows well so the outside lane of the M42 also flows well, until some muppet blocks it up trying to push into the queue to get onto the M42
