I ride 70 miles per day of our lovely motorways, and I find I can happily sit for 50 of those in lane 1 whilst popping into lane 2 and back to lane 1 without much hassle, if I try to ride in lane 3 I find the gaps between traffic are smaller and usually in lane 2 people aren't paying attention. Lane 1 is normally quiet apart from the truck ruts in the road.

Thats how accidents are caused becasue of pratts like you undertaking

There is no specific law preventing undertaking, they might get you on due care and attention but that requires a policeman around to a) catch you and b) give a **** about anything other than speeding. Cases of people being pulled for this have been thrown out of court with the officer being told to pull over the middle lane moron next time. So long as you don't end up undertaking and then having to pull out in front of the guy you're fine IMO.

Personally I don't think undertaking an MLM is any more dangerous that overtaking it. The kind of person prone to MLM behaviour will have terrible observation both to the left and to the right so if you're alongside when they decide to change lane you're going to get hit anyway. The safest approach is to just get past them as quickly as possible.

HGVs, yes the "elephant racing" HGVs are annoying but at least they have a bit of an excuse as their trucks are fitted with speed limiters which are set to approximately 56mph. There is a slight variation in the calibration of these things meaning that one HGV is allowed to go slightly faster than the other. If you don't like the HGV speed limiter and the effect it causes, blame EU legislation.

Back on the subject of MLMs, this site is pretty good in my (incredibly biassed, since I wrote the site) opinion. :)

Under taking is very dangerous as if you are in the blind spot

Are there no blind spots on the other side, then?

Same principle applies whatever side you pass on. Plenty of drivers don't check either mirror before moving.

FWIW, I pass on the left all the time as its the only way to make progress. Take the same precautions as you would for passing on the right and there won't be a problem. None of the Police cars I've done it in front of have thought its a problem, either.

People get quite annoyed at this but in some cases I think there is a good reason not to drive in the inside lane.

Heavy wagons have but quite deep tracks in some parts of the M5 and this can cause the car move from side to side as it gets caught in the grooves. I find the extent to which this happens depends on the car but it seems the wider the tires on the car the worse it is. I can imagine this might cause problems if you are towing a caravan.

Gosh, didn't look at it like that! :T

I can drive in excess of 200 miles and find it as quick and less stressful using lane 1.

Too many cocks in Audi's and BMW's use lane 3 wrongly.

    Under taking is very dangerous

I lived in the US for five years and it worked just fine there - no problem at all. Why can't we do it too?
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Why do the shed dragging middle lane hogging bell ends need a special test??

They should do exactly the same test as you do in a car but with their shed attached, complete with 3 point turns, reversing around corners and parallel parking.

If they can't do it, take, not only their plywood shed, but take their driving license off them.

Only give it back after a course of medication has cured them of their perverse attraction to their little swinging conventions at the back of an old farmers field.
