  • That was one of my problems. Very Frustrating. I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel
  • I have a problem but I'm sure quite a lot of people do have the same.

I'm getting roughly 1k/month from Maintenance & Grants. 700 for accom. 80 for Oyster and 180 for food. that leaves me with 40 bucks. And there are so many things not included such as Clothes, toiletries, books, entertainment etc. Is this normal? Is it really to get a job? Or can I ask student finance for further finance?

Student finance have given you what you're entitled to, you won't get more from them.

£180 per month for food sounds quite high to me: are you self-catering on that or eating out all the time? Head to Old Style if you need help with eating for less.

But yes, getting a job is quite normal, depending on your course. Two of mine only worked in vacations, the 3rd does 1 or 2 evenings at the local cinema all year round.

  • Hi, can someone shed some light on this please...

My student loan started in sept 2000 ending in 2003. I have been repaying to since 2004. But in the last few statements, the interest i seem to be paying is slightly higher than what I'm automatically repaying through my wages.

So for example, i received my statement today and have repaid £213, but the interest is £287.95 - meaning my automatic repayments are making no actual difference to the loan. If anything my loan is in actual fact increasing, as the interest is higher than my repayment!!

How does this make sense?? Help!

£180 per month is an enormous amount to spend on food for one person - you need to be looking at halving this at the very least.

For people making no or low repayments, it's normal to find that the amount outstanding increasing.

Tuition fees are a tax on not learning a foreign language ;-) Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, etc have excellent universities which any British Sixth Former who is a EU citizen can apply to.
  • Hi, I was wondering if you could help shine some light on the process and whether I have any hope in the scenarios I am in:

Firstly, myself and my partner applied for student finance early in June.

My partner is a first time student and I am a returning student.

    Problem 1)

Online the highest amount my partner was eligible for was £3000ish when the guidelines state £9000.

After speaking to an advisor, they asked us to complete sections 7/8 and 9 manually and send them in. We have done so.

    Problem 2)

Initially all my finance was agreed, then suddenly changed without much notification. Stating that I would not be eligible for a Tuition fee loan unless compelling reasons were granted.
Well it just so happens I have compelling circumstances and have provided the evidence 2months ago by special delivery.

Though I have no response, the call centre cannot answer and questions and my course has stated that unless I pay £3000 upfront by tomorrow, I will lose my place on my course.

Problem 3) Childcare grant application, as it initially approved my application, I have had to put my daughter into childcare to get her settled in before we both became full time.

All of the paperwork including evidence, forms and partners info were sent in 2 months ago by special delivery.

    How long should it take?

I wrote a complaint/appeal by email and to my surprise recieved an instant response. But that stated it will take 10-15 days to process a reply to my email lol.

Problem 4.....which is quite a serious one for us all!)

The slc log in website has a security glitch!
When I log in with my CRN, Password and secret answer, I log out and shut down the screen.
If my partner was then to use the same computer, with his CRN, Password and secret answer and then click on view correspondence, my details will be shown!

Its not just my home computer, its works from the iphone and the library computer too.
I believed that my information was safe.
But, even though I had logged out and my partner had to log in using a new screen, he could still see my info and vice versa.

Hi I don't know if anyone can help me with this...
I left university in 2004 with a large debt! I studied for a teaching degree in a shortage subject, which meant that my loan would be paid off. However, as I started on a maternity cover, then graduated into permanent at the same school, it took a little while for my pay to reach the threshold where loan payments kick in. Once I realised I was paying my loan (I was a little slow, couple of months) and got around to querying it with my school in early 2005, they didn't know anything about it, so I contacted SLC and got passed around from pillar to post. Basically the story was that I had missed the deadline for claiming it, and my school should have alerted me and made sure I sorted it out, and since they hadn't, no-one was willing to help.
I am ashamed to say I left it at that after a couple of weeks of fruitless ringing around, and have been paying every month since. I currently pay almost £200 per month before tax, and it's due to finish next year, but I'm still annoyed that I didn't get what I signed up for.
Does anyone know if/how I could get any sort of refund?
    Thanks
    J
