Does anyone know where you can find the penalties levied by SLC? I've done a bit of work with Google but been unsuccessful so far :(

They have some penalties around not keeping them informed of a current address. I've never been stung by them myself, although I've never told them anything (although HMRC seems to keep them up to date), I was just curious as to what penalties they levy and for what (not just for address). If you search you can find some mentions of penalties for working overseas and not keeping them informed, but I can't find anything on a Government site that details them.
  • Hi there. This is my problem. I did a stupid degree years ago which leads to a career not compatable with having a family, so not a route i can now pursue. I home educate my autistic son and through teaching him maths have found an unexpected passion for it. I would like to do a degree in mathmatics with a view to teaching it. The OU does a maths/teaching maths degree which is perfect but even part time the fees are 2500 a year. We are a low income family (less than 25k) so as it stands i cannot do the degree as i already had a student loan from my first degree. I know the govt is short of maths teachers so i'm wondering if there is any other funding available for maths degrees. Also i have looked in to doing a distance learning degree in the EU but it's a shame as the OU course is perfect, being geared towards teaching maths. Any suggestions?

Just got a letter from student loans stating that HMRC has informed them i am working.

This is news to me as i have been on employment and support allowance for years.

Their contact pages are bewildering what do i do?

Who do i contact in HMRC?

Is it likely to be fraud or human error?

Can you not just reply to the letter? You know, as a letter?

  • Hi all,

I'm new here and need some serious help. I'm totally naive and not knowledgable where student loans oare concerned as I've never borrowed any.

I'm looking to attend college to do an access to HE course next year Sept and then try for uni the following year (2014). Now, I may definitely need a little help with the course fee's, so if I borrow a small loan for this will it jeopardize my chances of borrowing a student loan again for university?

Basically is it ok to borrow more than one loan?

    Cheers,

    Appreciate your help on this!

    Caz

Access courses are not eligible for student loans.
  • I took out a student loan in 1996 over the years I have paid half back defaulted several times gone bankrupt ( student loan was not taken into account) and deferred I have been paying it again for the last 18 months but am now unable to so have tried to defer again to be refused as the loan has matured and gone straight to a debt collection agency who are demanding the whole 1,300 now. What options are available to me? Thank you in advance
