Yes, I realise the letters are automated. I just wish that a human picked up on a problem at some point and actually let you know about it. I know that you are a great help, Taiko, and I know that the woman I have spoken to in the complaints department has been a great help, it's just so frustrating a system...
  • Does anybody know why my daughter has been awarded (student loan and NHS bursary) what amounts to £1100 less for doing an NHS course than she would if she was doing a non NHS course please?

NHS funding is different. While she receives less money, she won't be paying course fees. Those are picked up by the NHS.
  • Hi sarah and taiko, we have found ourself in same position. My daughter has found out shes getting 1100 less to live on. We hadnt expected or budgetted for this. She gets the minimum loan as our income is above the threshold but we are struggling to get the money to help with her halls fees never mind this now. We appreciate she'll have no fees loan at end of it but what does she live on now is the problem. Her loan next week is 795 for term and her halls fees are 1300 for the term. We are just about going to be able to meet this but shes getting less than everyone else to live on now. We really didnt realise how much we were going to have to put in and now its here its scary. Apparently in england scotland and wales students also get 1000 non means tested grant which makes up the shortfall in the maintenance loan but noone in northern ireland knows anything about it and the people i spoke to in england say they dont know anything about NI. Seems unfair that they are in worse position than other students here whi arent getting fees paid and also those in mainland doing same courses!!

    Just a quick one.

I went to a progression meeting about going into my third year, but they are making me take the second year AGAIN.

They have told me to contact Student Finance about this. But will I still be able to get full loan? I will be studying part time on a full time course and studying 4 modules.

If you're actively attending lectures, you'll be entitled to a maintenance loan. Anything on top of that depends on your previous study history.
  • For anyone trying to get their head around the whole (mess of a) student finance system, and how to get to grips with student loans etc, I'd recommend grabbing a free copy of this book/guide http://www.savethestudent.org/books/student-finance
  • Hi, this is a first time for me so maybe you can help me? Im 32 years old and decided now is the time to further my career.I have never done any higher education so never claimed student loans and have been told that i qualify. I have worked within retail now for 12 years and want to continue to climb the ladder which at my current employment there are no such opportunities. Anyway this pushed me to recently enrolling to a Open university course for a degree in retail management...so i now have the student tuition fees loan paperwork and begun to fill it in. As i dont have a passport i have to send my birth certificate in and get someone to vouch for me, so i have a neighbour who has been a manager of a supermarket and has known me for 6 years and has agreed that he will vouch for me. Is this acceptable?

We have a computer printout showing that all information was submitted to SF in April 2012.
As no grants were forthcoming, I logged on to see that the passport details circle was not ticked. After submitting (again!) and failing to get the circle ticked.... we called STUDENT FINANCE tonight.

The SF rep. tells us there is a problem with their system.
"Can you just download the passport details form and post it to us"
    Arghhhhh.....

Is there anything else you need? I asked.
"Yes... although you say your wife is not earning from employment, we must have a HMRC Statement of earnings to confirm that"

Has anyone else been told they have to prove ZERO earnings like this? (I can only imagine the fun and games we are about to have with HMRC!!!)
THE NUMBER is how much you need to live comfortably: very IMPORTANT as part 1 of Retirement Planning. (Average response to my thread is £26k pa)
  • Hi, I have started University this past week and am have just received my maintenance loan from Student Finance..However my Maintenance Grant is still in the process of being amended. I have spoke to Student Finance again today and they have now said due to a differ in my sponsors earnings, i need a statement of earnings from HMRC. I dont really know how to go about this and now i am worried i am not going to be able to pay my rent for this semester. I worked alot of hours the month before i started so i worked out i will probably have about seven hundred pounds..but that money wont last forever and is my last BIG wage. Also i had a re-finance loan with LLoyds TSB and the big wage was meant to clear that debt so i could get a student bank account.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom:A
