Wow, does this thread still exist? Over 18 months since I last posted. I see we still have Neil Bond and Jackie Black regualrly, how are we all.

I see the rate is almost unchanged in 2 years ;)

Yes, but we've lost the inimitable Inspector Monkfish! :)

    Does anyone know why?

CHARTING MARKETS: The Sterling Prize Is a New 2012 Low vs USD
-- Sterling is going for a new 2012 low, $1.5275

    -- Resistance is $1.5458

    By Stephen Cox, CMT

Cable, which sold off this session, is likely to extend its downtrend to the trough of the year.

June's counter trend move fell apart on June 21 when sterling fell below $1.56332. The move, as I calculate it, implied initial support in the $1.54586-$1.54504 technical band.

I don't consider sterling to be decisively below $1.54504 now; it's trading at $1.54174. The intraday low is $1.53934.

On the other hand, recent news hasn't been in sterling's favor.

Observers note that the Bank of England may be pressed to cut rates to stay in line with the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan, a move that the BOE has so far resisted for some time.

In any case, sellers who deem that sterling is vulnerable can expect an eventual test of support at $1.52758. The current year's low is $1.52350, the January low.

It's likely that new 2012 lows will follow.

Take profit at the June low, $1.52690.

    Hi there

Thanks for the great posts and contibutions so far....

We are going to the US doing a trip: LAS VEGAS, SAN FRANCISCO, WEST COAST - L.A - 13 nights total on 30th August 2012.

We need to pay for hotels when we get there, car hire, petrol, excursions, food, etc

What do you think is the best option for us???

We plan on taking altogether £3000 to cover things - but we are just not sure which cards to get? and whether or not to get cash too??

    Any advice much appreciated....

You may have left it a bit late to get 'best buy' cards (if you don't already have them) if you're off in two weeks

  • Sorry if this is not quite travel but it is currency and $s - I am in the US and my son will be studying at the University of Glasgow for his degree. He will be opening a UK account (suggestions welcome - he is not eligible for all the student specials) and am trying to figure out the cheapest way to transfer money to him. Wires are pricey (it was $150 for £2000 for his down payment) and looked at PayPal - .5% fee but then they mark up the exchange rate 2.5% which adds up quickly. THANKS

Wrong thread , this is just the market rate thread. You want to find the best tourist rate and cost which is something else really. I have no idea who is the best deal, clarity credit card is good for spending yourself?

woot nice to see it in the 1.60's
  • Its done well, it now needs to beat last weeks highs soundly. Its most likely to fall back, 1.60 would still be positive
  • Hey,

Can anyone advise on the best rate going for USD at the moment and the best place to get them? Off to the states Friday and American Express and picking up from the airport seems to be the best rate?

Also, would anyone advise just going to the States and then just pulling out $'s when I get there from an ATM? I am off to stay with a friend so won't be needing a lot of cash. Just wondering which would work out best!

    Thanks!
