MARKET TALK: UK Pound Slides Amid BOE Talk Of More Possible QE
    11:28 (Dow Jones)

The UK pound is sliding lower against the dollar after the Bank of England's Martin Weale says there is still a case for more quantitative easing from the central bank. The BoE has been on hold when it comes to increasing its bond-purchase program, but fresh talk of QE is once again hurting the pound. Weale's remarks were reported by BBC Radio. The U.K.'s economy remains weak. It contracted 0.3% in the first quarter compared with the previous three months. QE talk from any major central bank is oftentimes an immediate signal to sell the currency. The pound is no exception. The pound is at $1.5652 from a session high of $1.5702 and a late Thursday price of $1.5676, according to EBS via CQG.
BOE's Weale Says There's Still A Case For More QE
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Falling output in the U.K. strengthens the case for more stimulus but that has to be balanced against high inflation, Bank of England policy maker Martin Weale said Thursday.

Weale told the BBC in a radio interview that the U.K. economy is "very weak" and a downward revision to first-quarter gross domestic product earlier this week was "disappointing."

Official figures show the economy shrank 0.3% in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, whereas an earlier estimate put the contraction at 0.2%.

"I said when [the first estimates] appeared that I thought they strengthened the case for further support for the economy with more asset purchases," Weale said, according to a recording of the interview posted on the BBC website. But he added policy makers are also grappling with an annual inflation rate measured at 3% in April--higher than the BOE's 2% target.

"Our job is to deliver inflation close to its target of 2%," Weale said.

The BOE called a halt to the expansion of its GBP325 billion bond-buying stimulus program, also known as quantitative easing, in May, citing stubborn inflation and signs of health in the economy despite the gloomy official data.

Yet the possibility of economic turmoil if Greece leaves the euro zone has raised fears about the U.K.'s prospects. Although he said a Greek departure from the curency union would cause "disturbances" he added he's sure the nation can withstand any fallout.

"If you look back over the past 100 years the British economy, and the U.K., has withstood quite a lot."
