Charged £5 for damaging table mat

Poppy9 wrote:Dear Sir,
I heard a very strange story at the Mayors drinks party the other night. I dropped a glass which broke and Councillor Davies chipped in that if you were in David's restaurant you would have to pay for the glass. Seems there is a story circulating that you charge for damages. Something to do with a 3 year old and a tablemat with stickers on.
Anyway I'm sure it's a load of rubbish but can you confirm I won't have to pay for any damages if I bring my Mother in Law to your restaurant on Mothers day. You know what Mother in laws are like, I might kill her with a steak knife but if I miss I might hit the table.
Thanks
Mr Killa

Seeing as they gave you four of the mats we can safely assume that four mats do not cost them any more than £5. Therefore, if someone had already damaged a mat in "your" set then they have already recovered the cost from the previous customer and did not need to charge you.
Also, if they were so bothered about the state of the damaged mats then why was the fork abused one still in circulation?
Although the money had already been paid by your friend, you could have gotten your own back and really annoyed them by only accepting your slightly damaged one and three other pristine mats. "No, look that one's got a scratch on it"... "That ones a slightly different colour"... etc. :-)0 -
just sent my e-mail - here it is -
dear david,
could you please tell me if you are able to accommodate a party of children of 10. we will of course bring our own tablemats and crokery to avoid any possible damage to yours - would you mind washing them for us - I assume there would be no additional charge as you would have to wash your own.
I got quite a polite reply ....

Mr. Ridgway is beginning to sound quite spooked!
It's probably the most interest he's had in his little enterprise!0 -

Well maybe you should email him to look on this thread, he may well refund your £5 as a gesture of goodwill. I would certainly aslo warn the public by putting your complaint in the local paper. Surely he is not allowed to add money to your bill other then what you ete/drank
I wouldn't pay it :rolleyes:0 -
This thread has really made me laugh :rotfl:
I really hope they are publicly named and shamed, I want to email them myself but dont have the intelligence to come up with something clever and witty!! I love the way the users of this forum come together to get revenge on idiots set to rip us off! I thank you all for that :T0 -
You (almost) have to feel sorry for him. I mean there he is, plodding away, and suddenly there's a flurry of interest from potential customers, all of whom seem to have a table mat fixation. I wonder, was he the manager who told the OP the place mat had to be paid for? The whole thing looks like the result of amateurs thinking "I can start a restaurant" with absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. Sounds to me like they could do with the attentions of Gordon Ramsey - a match made in hell.
