If I were you I would write a letter about it to the local newspaper. Cafes/restaurants are supposed to take normal customer wear and tear into consideration and they buy their tablemats in bulk. Having to replace a whole set because you damaged one isnt on.

Reminds me a bit of when I was little. Apparantly (and I dont remember this) my mum took me in a cafe and I damaged a flower arrangement. The cafe owners asked my mum to pay for it and she said she wouldnt so he threw her out and she never went in there again!!!

I wonder what they would have done if your friend had refused to pay for the mats and only paid for the meal? And did they get a receipt for the £5 -I presume they just deducted it out of the change which I think may be overcharging and therefore trading standards may be concerned. I would have stood my ground and made a fuss until they gave me my money back I really don't think the police would appreciate their time being wasted to apprehend a dangerous sticker placing child and a polite but firm adult who was reasonably and politely requesting their correct change.
Maybe you should send a counter claim for stress and trauma involved.

Instead of going to the local newspapers, how about a woman's mag with real life stories, such as Womans Own, Woman etc etc.

They pay for your story, you just call a number and give them the outline. They would also contact the cafe for their response. Would be seen by a wider audience.

Can just imagine you in the photo holding the mats up.

I have considered that but unless I can loose a stone PDQ I'd have to request a body double. Local's one thing, national, in colour........ LOL

Run by a former Councillor and his daughter. I'm sure they would welcome some free publicity!

Lets all email to say we've heard he charges for damaged tablemats.

    Along the lines of

    Dear David,

I was very impressed by your website which extols the virtues of your restaurant. The mother's day menu looks especially inviting and I would like to book a table for 10 to treat my wife on this her special day.

Before confirming the booking can you please confirm as ludicrous the story I heard today in the local shops that you charge diners for any damage to placemats. I understand that a 3 year old child left some stickers on a mat and a gentleman too caused some damage. Both parties claim they were charged £5 each even though the mats were worn and had cutlery marks on them.

Also if my child dropped some food onto their clothes and it stained would you pay for professional cleaning. I would expect normal food stains to be easily removed with a normal Bio powder. However if this was not the case I would seek redress from you the proprietor.

Finally my wife has a rather large posterior. If when she sat down the chair broke would she be expected to pay for it?

    Thank you

    Mr Wyn D Hup

Oops I've already done it. Wish I'd known he was a councillor first though as I could have put something in about hearing the story at the mayors drinks party!!

I used my spam hotmail address.
