And I don't really understand Marty J's point, considering the current Mac OS is slower than previous incarnations on similar hardware.

    Let's talk when OS X 10.6 is released. ;)

To be fair, Marty, I have no doubt the new point release of OSx will be better than the last (do apple charge for point releases, or is it a free upgrade?). I'm sure microsoft could make a faster and more stable OS if they could also control the hardware it was to be run on...much easier testing on half a dozen different configurations than the millions available to ms users. Apple can also take the brave (and very sensible) decision to stop supporting old hardware in their later OSes, but, as you see, we have users on this board complaining that their 15 year old paralell port scanner won't work in their new vista PC...some people are hard to please..without electrodes to the temples or a cluebat :D

Oh, I agree totally. Microsoft's market is different from Apple's and so on, and both have their advantages and disadvantages.

But if Apple can pull off Grand Central and OpenCL, it'll take more than a service pack from Microsoft to compete with that.

As for price, it'll be interesting to see how Apple spin that. $129 for an OS X update with hardly any new features will be a hard sell to Joe Public.

I don't think Apple are that bothered about selling £80 OSs, they concentrate on £1,000 computers to make their money.
Anyway, I've got the RC running on an Athlon 64x2, and it's snappier than the beta, great improvement coming out of sleep too. Also running great in BootCamp on a MacBook Pro. Knowing how stable it is, might put it on my mum's Compaq N600, which is a great wee machine with a P3m processor and 512mb, so that could be interesting.
This resource hog stuff is a bit false, Windows 7 has been brought forward because Vista has been so unpopular and seen as slow. Win7 has been designed to run on netbooks, which Vista was not, so, despite doing a lot more under the bonnet, has been engineered to boot faster, and feel snappier. Please don't install it if you're the kind of person who has a lot of PC problems they have to ask other people for help with though, this is NOT for you!

dont know why everyone bad mouths vista so much yes it had its problems when first came out but in my opinion its 100times better than xp, granted i have 4gb of ram in my laptop for it to run but heck it runs as smooth as a baby's bum and have tried running windows 7 on it with virtual pc and it works a charm too, only running it with 2gb of ram but gonna give it 3gb and see how it goes

Testing the RC on a machine with 2gb ram and it runs fine. As previous posters have mentioned, Windows 7 (while not primarily designed to) can run on Netbooks. Being as most of these are running atom processors and usually 1gb ram then it cant be that bad...... can it?

PS - the laptop I am typing this on only has 1gb ram and runs Vista Ultimate with no probs at all!

Guess who just downloaded the RC of Windows 7?

I'm going to give it a whirl once some blank DVDs I've ordered get here.

    I don't want anyone saying I don't give Microsoft a chance. ;)
