I'm up to nearly 800 uses so far and have never had the problem.

About an hour ago I dialled 18866, and I know that I dialled correctly as it showed up on my Telephone Screen, and again 118866 answered. This is not a joke, as it costs over 40p each time it happens.
I e-mailed 18866 this morning and this is the response that I received:

Thank you for bringing this fault to our attention.

If we require any further information to resolve this fault we will get back to
you as soon as possible; however we work with a small team and therefore it may
take a short while to receive a response.

Please be assured that the fault will be solved even if we do not request any
further information from you. Our technical team is informed of all incoming
fault reports and will act upon them where necessary. If the fault persists
please mention this in your fault report.

Debs, I contacted BT and they informed me that they weren't able to bar 118866. I have received another e-mail from 118866, as follows:

    customer.services@118866.co.uk

The first thing I would suggest you try is removing the 18866 from speed dial and then dial 18866 manually from your phone. If when you dial and the same situation occurs the problem is not with 11 88 66 but is with your network provider which is rerouting the call incorrectly to us. We do not have any control over network provider's digit analysis and therefore we cannot be responsible. It should be noted that all directory enquiry numbers start with 118. I would suggest that you contact the company that controls the 18866 service and explain to them your problem. It is their duty to contact their network providers to ensure that the correct data fill has been carried out on the relevant telephone exchanges.
Below is the 18866 website that you can contact. You should provide 18866 with your postcode, network provider (BT or Cable & Wireless etc) and hopefully they can locate the exchange where the calls are being rerouted.

I trust that this will help
    Andrew

Thanks for your help Andrew. I could certainly try removing 18866 from the speed dial - though I hope I remember to enter it manually. I did fill in an online form to 18866 to report a fault, but have heard nothing back yet. It just seemed a huge coincidence the exact same thing happening both to me and my dad within 24 hours, when we live over 200 miles apart!
  • Except 1899 (for those mobile calls, that is).
Ah right, I need to investigate that properly then. Cheers! :)

According to HERE 18866 from a landline to a landline in Greece is 2p per min and from a landline to a mobile is 15p per min

I can confirm that and also that 1899 charge 4p per minute to Greece for a fixed landline and also 15p to a mobile. So something is wrong somewhere. Methinks you have been charged the BT rate !! Has this rate come up on your invoice ?? Nobody pays 21p per minute do they ?
PS. Did they give you the charge per minute when you dialled, as you can easily disconnect if it is incorrect or too high.

I don't always get the charge per minute, even though I KNOW that I have dialled 18866. I'm sure that it's not going through BT however as I have dialled the number properly.
    Do others find this?

Yes, this happens occasionally, but I don't think it's gone through BT, either.

This is usually because the phone has been answered so quickly, the message hasn`t had chance to play

I agree. That happens to my wife when she calls her sister in Spain on 1899 and the Spanish phone is engaged - so that the call hops straight onto the Spanish equivalent of 1571.

It's annoying because that's 3p connection each time!

Oh well, I suppose it's cheaper than (on BT) calling a UK number and 1571 answering (5p minimum during the week and 5.5p evenings and weekends).
