I just used a blank 80 minute cd-r disc. As long as you use a decent brand you should'nt have a problem.

Thanks. I just tried this and mine failed at 87%. Got an error message and then the cd drive wouldn't open. I have played a DVD and music CD ok up to now. Don't like it when things don't work properly. I haven't got the technical knowledge to start messing with the installation stuff. Hope my machine isn't going to become a nightmare. Anyone know if it's easy to get these discs from Dell. Any tips on getting freebies most welcome.

Unless you ordered the Recovery Discs with the laptop, Dell will not have supplied it.

I bought 2 Inspiron 1300's 6 weeks ago, one for my father and one for myself. I also had this problem with my Laptop, creating the recovery disk failed 5 times with Tesco CDR's, I suspected the disks so I got 2 Sony CDR's off a friend, both these failed as well.

The failures were at different percentages, anywhere between 40 an 90%.
I then tried again with a Tesco CDR and it worked. The only significant difference between when it failed and when it worked was I had upgraded to 512Mb of RAM, all the failures I had were with 256Mb of RAM.

I then tried to create a Recovery disk on my Fathers Laptop with a Tesco CDR, it worked first time. He also has 512Mb RAM.

One other difference between the 2 laptops is my DVD Writer is from NEC and my Fathers is from Sony according to the hardware info in XP.

I am not saying the amount of RAM is the issue, but it might be.

Sorry your having problems, my restore disc worked first time so I can't understand what the problem could be.
I'm sure somewhere else in this thread, someone mentioned that they contacted Dell with this and they sent them the restore disc free of charge. So it might be worth emailing them.

Just remembered I read it on rpoints, a couple of people said they'd contacted Dell and got disc's sent out to them.

i would try burning the discs at a lower speed than stated on the disc and ensure nothing else is running. That may work.
