i was put through to a call centre in india and the sales rep was not at all convincing when he told me it was no good for email on the move. even his chuckle sounded sooo poor. anyway, even after i gave him the evalue code of the laptop you guys managed to get it was not at the price that you got it so i didnt feel it was worth buying, especially with that service!
To be honest, I can't blame the folks in india - they'll be being paid peanuts and like any sales operation they'll be relying on commission. Dell has to make it worthwhile for them to sell all their goods otherwise they will behave in exactly this way. And you'll find the same behaviour anywhere that there is insufficient incentivisation.

The problem is with Dell's senior sales and marketing people who think that trying to do business with commission strucures like this is a good thing.

Has anyone else had a problem creating a Dell OS recovery cd on this? It get's to about 85% then stops and comes up with an error. If I try another disk it starts at 85% again so does not work. Anyone got any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Paul

Sorry to be dense, but my machine arrived last week - I assume I should do this Dell OS recovery CD - how is it done?

    Thanks

This isn't true. Yes they are paid 25% of what UK call center staff are paid, yet the cost of living is only 13.5% of what it is in the UK, so they are nearly twice as well off. Have a browse on the net, the figures are there.

Didn't the Dixon's Group announce this week that they were doing away with commission for their sales people?
Hopefully it'll work and Dell will learn from it.

Whilst the numbers are probably true, I disagree with the "wel off" bit. The cultural difference means in many cases individuals are financially supporting families (including elders). Also the cost of living has risen sharply in areas where foreign firms are outsourcing labour.

Finally, pretty much most sales jobs pay "poorly" and have an emphasis on commission to make up, in some cases the bigger proportion, of the pay. This is where the problem lies, IMHO.

If Dixons are doing what has been said in another post just here, then in theory you should get equally attentive staff whether you want to buy a 42" LCD TV for £2500 or a pack of batteries for £3!
