If the Great British Shopper was prepared to pay more for goods made here, im sure they would still be able to make the boast, but we want quality at the lowest price, hence the demise of manufacturing in this country.

Exactly and I know that ALL stores source their goods from the cheapest places possible but it's a sad reflection of where we now are as a former 'manufacturing nation'. I always check where an item is made (if it's stated!) and will buy a UK item if it's available and at a price I can afford. There are still some 'British made' items out there, just a few!

Given that most if not all of the items will have been made in China at the lowest possible cost by people earning an absolute pittance it's somehow fitting that they're being sold for a penny.
Long gone are the days when M and S boasted about the majority of their goods being 'British made'. How things have changed in 20 never mind 125 years............

Ture, but if M&S sticks to selling 'British made' goods only, it would have gone bust by now.

Watford were very organised. You gave an SA your bag, then you chose one of the jewellery items, which they put in the bag. Then the bag got passed on to the next SA, where there was a choice of the purse or the scarf. I also got the luggage label, the beach ball and the tea towel. The SA's were putting the items in your bag, not you, therefore there was only 1 of each item, but no more than 5 items.

I got there about 8.15 and was about 20th in the queue. By the time I left, the queue was enormous.

I also visited the Finsbury Pavement M&S (I work just round the corner), rocked up at 7.55 to a massive queue and was told all the stock had been allotted already....

Luckily the Mrs came up trumps for me but no cufflinks, which for me were the only thing worth having.

On reflection I'd rather have had an extra hour in bed!

Full list (from the leaflet they handed out)
Mug saying "Marks and Spencer, celebrating 125 years": Blue and White, quite small but nice quality
Tie: Navy Blue silk feel, with yellow and white pattern. I got this and the quality is nice.
Sweets: quite small bag, in my M&S they were "Rosy Apple", whatever that is!
    Leather Passport Holder: Black
Leather Luggage Tag: didn't see that
Socks: Black, with "Marks and Spencer, celebrating 125 years" in yellow written across the bottom of the foot.
Beach Ball: Red and white, with "Marks and Spencer, celebrating 125 years" written in blue. Quite small and looked pretty flimsy to me, even for a beach ball!
Drink: Ginger Beer in retro style can
Frisbee: Red plastic, with "Marks and Spencer, celebrating 125 years" written in white. Looked pretty durable.
    Cufflinks: Didn't see these
    Tea towel: retro design
Jewellery: Whereas the Mail said 5 sets, the leaflet said up to 5 sets. By the time I got there there were two sets, neither all that nice, and even if you liked them you could only have one set in total. Now I'm not complaining because it was free, but I'm not so sure I would have gone if I'd known this. Also the jewellery in the picture is nicer than what they actually sold.
Purse: Cream leather, two zip up pockets, very nice.
Knickers: Black lace, don't think they had a selection of sizes though.
Scarf: Didn't look my style so I didn't examine too carefully, but looked like cream with coloured polka dots.

I got there about 8:10 and there was a queue of about 40-50, by the time I left the queue was enormous and I doubt many of them got anything. But it was early enough for there to be some of everything left apart from the cufflinks.

Hi, I fully expect to be shot down in flames here...but..here goes anyway.

Is it possible that people can think of others as well as themselves? I like a bargain as much as the next person and will be at M&S today. But i don't intend to keep getting in the queue etc as i think this is wrong. M&S say 5 items per person and will have stocked for that....the way i see it if i get more than 5 then someone else will miss out and be disappointed? Isn't 5 enough...thats a real bargain and a great treat, and maybe another person wont be disappointed later on if we are not all greedy?

    Just a thought..............

So why don't you buy less than 5 items then, or not buy any, so there are more for everyone else? If people are willing to get up at 5am to queue for ~£25 total savings on items they wouldn'tve bought anyway, then good luck to them. And its good that the UK isn't a manufacturing country anymore - it's an indicator that the economy is progressing. Would you rather be a modern country with a real economy, or be like China, which is the world's manufacturing plant with only menial jobs available? You can't be affluent and be a low cost producer - goods that are still made in the UK are made here because they're higher quality & need higher skills to make. You get what you pay for, in terms of labour & goods.

I got to my local M&S at 8am this morning with my little boy (21 months). We were the first ones there, so I was really pleased. By the time 8.30 came, there was about 60-70 people waiting. I was queuing by the automatic doors, but they decided to open the side door first. Everyone raced through, I had to wait for the automatic doors to be opened, as I had the pram. I was so cross, as I ended up at the back of the queue!
