The easiest way is just to vote with your feet.
Alternatively buy a new 12-months sim-only contract as a new customer with £50 quidco/TCB cashback. O2 reportedly can do an internal transfers of your number to the new contract.
That said, you have to blame your iPhone in the first place for the "extortionate rate", not O2. iPhone contracts are notoriously expensive across all providers, especially for newish models.
If I took a new contract out with O2 wouldn't I have to pay for that one on top of my current extortionate one?
I'm just wondering if there's a way out of the contract or a way to get them to sweeten it.0

I'm a t-mobile/ee customer and have been for the past 2 years...when I first set up my contract I had a poor credit rating so couldn't get the tariff I wanted :-(...luckily still had 900mins unlimited texts and 1gb data for £35 a month...I always went over by minimum £15 on calls but always paid up...kept asking to upgrade tariff and never had anything done about it...was due to cancel last month so phoned up and said so...then said if they wanted to keep me they would need to give me unlimited calls text and data for no more than £40...I also stated I wanted the galaxy s4 at no charge...the were advertising it costing £79.99 for the phone...I got the deal I wanted :-)...I even managed to get free clone phone insurance with an excess of just £15 instead of the £25 is should be...for a hungover call first thing on a Saturday I don't think I did too badly lol0

Bit of haggling with Vodafone, got a 600min unlimited text 1GB internet and a 19 inch TV for £13.50 a month. Was paying £21 for less than that before contract renewal came up.0

Yes. My apologies, I missed that your current contract ends in December. If I took a new contract out with O2 wouldn't I have to pay for that one on top of my current extortionate one?
I think threatening them with leaving is unlikely to help, but you can try asking nicely.I'm just wondering if there's a way out of the contract or a way to get them to sweeten it.0

Am due an upgrade with t-mobile & found the online upgrades to be beyond a joke. My tariff had crept up to £36 over the past few years. Was on 600 mins 500 txts unlimited data. I got onto t-mobile chat with really low expectations. Said the upgrades weren't very competitive and she asked what phone i had in mind. I said i had my eye on the xperia z. She had a look & offered a free phone on the same tariff. I said i seen 500 mins unlimited txts & unlimited internet for £27. She got back to me with that tariff & the phone for £49.99 or go to the full monty tariff of £32 & she would knock it down to £28.50 with a free phone. I took that one in a flash & the phone will be delivered tomorrow. Easiest haggling experience i have ever had!!:D0

Just received a text message fro Three about an iphone 5 for £28 per month. One of my friends was emailing a guy from Three, Taylor.Lovie@three.co.uk, and managed to negotiate a fantastic deal with 500 mins, 5000 texts and unlimited data also threw in 2000 3to3 minutes for £28 and this was including vat which I thought was excellent. Also he informed me of a deal on the ipad mini with 5gb of data for £19.99 per month. I took him up on both these offers and I was told if I referred any friends or family members I could earn upto £60 worth of credit after 3 months 0 0

I always thought Three had the best prices around, but that made me wonder if their coverage was as good as Vodafone or O2.
There would be no point in getting an amazing deal, and one would not be able to get a signal.0

A piece of advice for you first. Make sure you have plenty of time to talk to them, expect to spend a good few hours on the phone, this might sound like a lot, but it's usually worth it. They are always happy to phone you back if you ask. Also, make sure you spend the time talking to the correct department (the retentions department).
The deals I've been offered so far today:
£11 for
1000 minutes
unlimited texts
750 MB
over 12 months
£8 for
Galaxy ace 2
200 mins
unlimited texts
500 MB
over 18 months
£18.50 for
Xperia SP
900 minutes
unlimited texts
1.5 GB data
unlimited openzone access
15 photo messages
over 18 months
(having just come off the same deal at £15.50 with Desire S)
I'm think that I may be able to get a slightly better deal with the Xperia.
It's also worth asking what else they can add on to your contract because often they can add things like openzone access and photo messages or 250 MG data etc.
Happy hunting!0
