It now depends as they have stopped issuing electron in their eyes are you getting a Visa Debit card or a Visa Debit card that is actually an electron card.

Do you see what I mean?

If it is a Visa Debit it will be a regular 3-in-1 card and start 4988, so it wont be restricted like the 4508 cards.

If you call and ask they should be able to tell you what they issued.

Okay I called CO-0P and I am getting the 3-in 1 card proper Visa Debit with Cheq Q which starts 4988 because I have a full current account.

Why aren't the banks switching to V PAY which is Visa's new European debit card for the 21st centaury? http://www.vpay.com/main.html

Apparently it’s cost-effective for banks to implement, efficient for merchants to accept, and secure for cardholders to use.

Why in the UK do we have Visa Debit, Visa Electron, Mastercard Maestro and Solo?

In the US they have Mastercard Debit but why can't we have that!!!

Also why are all the banks switching away from Maestro when they've just spent a fortune advertising it as the new form of cash????

The Co-op's cashminder account isn't my primary account, I opened it in 2005, use it as a parachute account really.
Anyway my old 'green' Electron card is still valid until the end of October 09. So just to experiment I used it in sainsbury's to buy some provisions. On the receipt it came up with just Visa Debit.

I'm sure in Sainsbury's it used to show up as Electron?
Just wondering if Sainsbury's recognize the prefix 4508 as a proper Visa debit? Sure I read that the Co-op are saying it's the merchant's that are not updating their equiptment to recognise the prefix 4508 as a proper Visa debit.

I use Yorkshire Bank as I have a proper Maestro card that starts with 6759**** no probs with it. My hubby has a Co-op Smile bank account with a FULL Visa debit and that starts with 4988.

Wonder if it will be sorted one way or the other.
