Co-op Cashminder debit card changes to VISA Debit from June

Some retailers/merchant services have our CoOp card type set as "Visa" on receipts, where as others will have "Electron".
This thread is about an update - to change the physical card type to "Visa Debit", which is the Electron's big brother.
Although our card (full auth) will work a little different to the typical Visa Debit, in that every transaction will require authorisation and we'll get no cheque guarantee limit.0 -
Where I work for instance, CoOp Electron cards show up as "Visa" on the receipt, the Abbey Electron states "Visa Electron" and (for some bizarre reason), the Lloyds TSB Duo card states "Personal Account".0

They can generally customise it to anything they like, for example all Barclays connect debit cards come up as "CONNECT DEBIT", some Capital One cards come up as "CAP1 MASTERCARD" etc. Lloyds Airmiles Duo Amex has its set to "Personal Account", which is a bit odd.
It's a bit annoying when they customise the label to say "Visa" for their debit cards, as people may have a Visa debit and credit card and could cause confusion. Same as with Lloyds and their "Personal Account" business - it probably must confuse the hell out of some people, wondering what this "Personal Account" is.0 -
It has the Electron AID number.
I have had a full auth Visa Debit with A&L for ages (think it was one of the first full auth cards - so Im told) and that has the Electron AID number? But that says Visa Debit.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -
Just abit of an update for you guys and gals.
My brother got a call from a manager at the co op today.
They aware of the problem and they have contacted Visa International.
Visa International have said they will update there databases to ensure that the 4508 BIN is recorded as visa debit and not an visa electron over the next week or so.
Which will in turn resolve the problem so they say....
Guess youll have to wait and see
Hi,
Sorry to appear a little thick here, but does that mean my Co-Op Electron card begining 4508 will in the future be treated as a Visa Debit and be valid at railway stations etc where Electron is currently a 'no-no'.
Also will this be the end of using it 'free' on Ryanair if 4508 cards become visa Debit?
Thanks

4508 is visa electron and always will be. Unless VISA reassign the BIN number to visa debit, which would affect other banks using the same prefix so i doubt they'll do that.
For example Halifax use 491754 for their visa electron and Abbey use 491731
if they changed 4917 to visa debit they'd both have to switch to the new card scheme.
4508 and 4844 are also generic visa electron prefixes used by many card issuers
so they basically need a new prefix if its to be a proper visa debit.0 -
So how come the co-op is trying to fob off it's customers with a Visa Debit card that they say is a Visa Debit but everyone else now knows isn't! I can't decide if the co-op is just stupid or cynical (ie we will stick Visa Debit on the card and shut up all the customers who were moaning about the electron)???????0

So, I take it, if they want all customers to have visa debit, those visa debit cards already sent out begining 4508 will all have to be replaced with ones starting with a new number?. If so it sure is one heck of a c*ck up by the co-op that they surely should have forseen.

Can they not just change the prefix 450875, and just the 4508 as they all also have a 75 after them.0

Trouble is that their seems to be a confusion over wether Visa can just switch the Co-op Electron over to a Visa card? I've read in this forum and in the bankruptcy forum at least 3 different scenario's - 1) some kind of message is sent electronically to tell retailers that the 4508 cards are now Debit Visa's 2) All the cards starting with 4508 will have to be recalled and replaced with proper Debit Visa's and 3) The whole electron system is to be shut down and thus all cards that were electron will become Debit Visa's. And then we have who's fault it is Co-op,Visa or retailers (ie Tesco?) and how long it's going to take to fix anything from 2 days to a year??? Arghhhhh! All I want is a card from the Co-op that I can use everywhere!!!!0
