    Yep, got it.

They don't often call the live Directory because it would significantly slow down their systems with such huge transaction volumes.

Unfortunately, getting large retailers to move on this, particularly the electron unfriendly ones - is not going to be easy. Hopefully the industry and Visa will put some pressure on them to sort it.

Bur surely it is not the job of co-op customers to go around asking merchants to update their equipment?.

Particularly as the co-op sent out leaflets with the cards telling recipients they can use the cards wherever they see the 'Visa' logo. There seems also to be no mention in the leaflet of the fact there are now apparantly two sorts of visa debit card (those that 'phone home' to authorise transactions and those that do not). Do they honestly expect their customers to only find out which card they have by 'trial and error' ie by when they are declined because a terminal in use is 'off line'? This could prove very embarassing, for example should one have eaten a meal in the dining car of a train where the menu's state they do accept Visa, only to find ones visa debit card is declined becaise it cannot 'phone home'. Terrible.

This does display an amazing lack of foresight by the co-op bank, who given they are bankers (and should be aware of the intricasies of the Visa system) should have forseen this situation occurring and advised customers accordingly.

I think I will be reviewing whether I wish to remain a co-op member and customer. If they cannot get things correct on matters such as these, what will they '!!!! up' next?

Thank god for this site again!

I got my shiny new visa debit cards through the post that replace my old electrons. Hurrah! I thought. I can shop at Tescos finally.

    NOPE.

Did a whole order, tried to check out. Won't let me.

Spoke to Co-op, who tell me it's still treated as an Electron. So I told them in no uncertain terms that if they send me a card saying Visa Debit, then that is exactly what it should be. If behind the scenes it's something else then that is mis-advertising and I'll be reporting the whole scam to trading standards. She tried to fob me off by saying it's to do with Visa themselves, but I told her that I'm their customer, not Visas and it's something they need to sort out between them.

I've found them a great bank to be with so far, but this is just rubbish and sloppy. Will look elsewhere I think. I have a visa debit with my Lloyds basic account and that works everywhere! Co-op have no excuse.

Just popped a google search in about it and lo and behold lots of grumbles coming from the MSE website, hence why I'm here. :D

Oh well, looks like back to dire sainsburys for me then. Waaaaaaaaah!

Yeah I agree I have a cash account with lloyds and the Visa Debit card works everywhere and shows as visa delta. The only downside with that account is you have to only use lloyds TSB cash machines.

Try Barclays or LLoyds TSB if you can.
  • I've just signed up for the Cashminder. The CS girl said that it's not an Electron, but it's not a Visa Debit either. It's a mixture of the two - called a Visa Electron Debit Card. I know someone who works them, who says that this will eventually roll out to a full Visa. In the meantime I'm going to keep my money with the Co-op and put half of my spending money into the Lloyds TSB account (to use their Visa Debit). I like the Co-op's ethical policies and the fact that I can withdraw cash anywhere.

Quick warning though.... be very careful if you're going to transfer money into any Lloyds account. After hearing stories of "missing" transfer money, a friend (who also works for a bank) traced the entire transfer process from their usual account to their Lloyds one. The money was sent across fine, yet somehow Lloyds tried to fob her off, claiming that it was never sent! This happened twice to her and has also happened to other people I know.

You're better off making cash deposits if you need to top up your Lloyds account!
  • it would be good news if tesco would except the darn card ! Mines now an debit card and was an electron and tesco will not except! everyone else seems to.
  • 450875 is still listed on my card machine as Electron.

(It's updated each night by Bank of Scotland)

I transfer money all the time from my HSBC account to Lloyds TSB and it reaches my account in seconds and I never had any problems.
