So basically we have to push the likes of Tesco and M&S to push their "merchant service provider" to update their software? It's not a problem with the Co-op or Visa Debit as such! Is that the bones of it ?

    Yep, got it.

They don't often call the live Directory because it would significantly slow down their systems with such huge transaction volumes.

Unfortunately, getting large retailers to move on this, particularly the electron unfriendly ones - is not going to be easy. Hopefully the industry and Visa will put some pressure on them to sort it.

Oh well looks like my chances of internet grocery shopping at tesco's isn't likely to happen any time soon! Looks like sainsburys for me! Boohoo I was hoping to save some money!

    Hi,

    For clarity.

This is a Visa Europe driven initiative and not the banks, be that the Co-operative Bank or any other.

Visa are "re-branding" the electron card as 'Visa Debit' , the only difference is that there are now 2 versions of a Visa Debit card. One with a Cheque Guarantee symbol on the back and one without (the old electron).

Visa are doing this to attempt to get rid of the stigma attached to the Electron brand - nobody likes it. Although in reality the only difference is that it isn't embossed and so can't be used in the old carbon swipe machines (who uses those now anyway?).

Anybody who has started to issue the new style debit cards (all/most UK banks who have existing electron customers whose cards are coming up to expiry), will have registered their card range with Visa as a 'Debit' not electron.

However, some companies may still 'see' these as Electron Cards until they update their software / get an updated version of the Visa Directory. Some payment software uses local copies, or a stored copy of the card number ranges - so it will always be behind.

In the meantime, treat it as an Electron card (even though it says debit). Or if a company won't accept it, speak to their management and get them to update their Point of Sale software / speak to their merchant services provider.

Eventually the initial issues will be ironed out and you'll be able to use your shiny new debit card in a lot more retailers than you could do your electron.

But Electron is definately no more........

That makes sense however shouldnt co op be playing some part of this awell.

For example RBS are about to switch to visa debit and they as bank communicated the switch over to merchants etc to ensure the cards worked by the time it started etc. Shouldnt the co op have done something similar?

No they didn't have the same trouble as Co-Op. The Barclays the 2-1 visa debit from barclays was allocated a brand new visa debit BIN number.

Co Op simply changed the lable on the bottle from Buckfast to Moet and carried on selling.

Same prefix same card doesn't matter what it looks like.

Can you use the Barclays Debit at Tesco pay@pump? That's the only reason I really want a 2-in-1 debit with the CoOp.

It wouldn't bother me to keep the Electron so much, if only the CoOp would be honest with their customers and all advisors sung from the same hymn-sheet.
