Co-op Cashminder debit card changes to VISA Debit from June

Hi,
But surely a Visa Debit Card is a Visa Debit card and can be used at all outlets (including Railway Stations, machines etc) that display the visa debit sign?
How is one to know whether they have a 'ful authority' one or not?.
Thanks
Tally
This is a very good point!!
I work with the railway as a conductor and the machines we use to issue tickets are not connected to any live terminals to check individuals bank accounts thats why at present we don't accept Visa Electron or Solo cards.
With the banks now going to issue Visa Debit cards the only way a conductor on the train is going to know that authority has to be granted immediately is if the card has the words "Electronic Use Only" but even then some cards might not have this.
I'll update you as and when we are briefed about any changes and to be honest it will be a slow process, it always is!0 -
electron cards are not embossed and can only be used electronically (whatever thats suppose to mean) - bearing in mind that all cards are swiped nowadays electronically - the visa debit cards are embossed0
-
The full authorisation Visa debit cards use the same prefixes as other visa debit cards
see www
.barclaycardbusiness.co.uk/docs/bin_rules_nov_2008.pdf
They also use the same application ID for the chip: A00000000031010
whereas the Visa Electron AID is: A0000000032010
so the only way to tell is to use a magnetic stripe reader to look at the service code on the card.

After reading all these posts I thought ,at last, can get rid of horrible electron and be issued with visa debit card. However, have just phoned co-op and they tell me they have no idea where this info has come from and that they are NOT issuing visa debit cards from June or anytime and are still issuing electron cards.
Anyone got any definite info on this and where can you view it.
Thanks0 -
I've just telephoned the Cooperative Bank and have just been informed by the advisor that the Visa Debit Card is not being issued as from June 2009.
This is a complete nightmare as yesterday i was told that the Visa Debit Card was being issued from June 2009....
The advisor I spoke with has raised the issue with someone and i'm supposed to get a call back tomorrow with regards to whether it is or is not happening.
I'll keep you posted!!!0 -

They can't be used in a "click-clack" imprinter which basically pushes the embossed details into a carbonated voucher, which is then signed by you and used to debit your account. The difference this makes is that with Electron, there's *no* chance of a payment being made with unavailable funds, whereas with the Visa Debits there's *some*.
The division is mostly academic now anyway, as most terminals in most major shops authorise online if they can - all Electron does is make that a requirement rather than a nicety.0 -
Re my post yesterday anyone know for sure if co-op is scrapping electron or not? I really hope they are!!!!0

Ok, We have an update!!
Let me begin with the question thats on everyones lips.... "Are the Cooperative Bank switching to Visa Debit on the Cashiminder Account?"
The answer is 100% YES!!!!
The Cooperative Bank will stop issuing Visa Electron cards from 8 June 2009
From this date the bank will issue 2 types of Visa Debit cards, 1 with a cheque guarantee facility and one without which will be the customers using the Cashminder account.
Existing customers will be issued with a new Visa Debit card when there existing Visa Electron card expires although there is probably away to get your new Visa Debit card quicker by calling the Cooperative Bank and explaining that your card is lost, stolen or broken.... Its a bit sneaky
Hope this is of help to everyone and should anyone want to double check this with the Cooperative Bank the information is located on the Cooperative Bank's internal internet as i was told by the person i was speaking to on the phone.0 -
Over time though the LTSB in Scotland is going to change its name to Bank of Scotland probably at the same time dropping Visa Electron in favour of its "superior" Visa Deibt card.
I thought after the merger of LTSB and HBOS, they would keep their own brand names (including their products)? :huh:Ok, We have an update!!

Good to hear that it's 100% true. No more speculations now! According to a person on the other thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1650763), he/she recieved a leaflet about Natwest/RBS is definately going to switch to VISA debit like Co-op.
Looks like Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank are the only ones that will offer Maestro debit cards. No bank is going to offer Solo cards.0 -

No, the Lloyds TSB Scotland brand name will disappear within the next 2-3 years, to be replaced by Bank of Scotland. So in England and Wales Lloyds TSB and Halifax will run alongside each other for now, in Scotland there will just be Bank of Scotland, and in Northern Ireland there will just be Halifax (no LTSB).
I don't know if Lloyds TSB products will move across to Halifax (or vice versa) though.0
