Car Scrappage Scheme

I debated long and hard on this forum mainly in favour the Scrappage scheme.
But i cannot believe how badly the government have managed to !!!! it up. Its not even if they where pioneering the scheme. They had half a dozen countries that they could picked from to copy.
Why make something so simple and effective so bl00dy complicated and ultimately less effective.0 -

Yes it's complicated, but it's only been going a week or so, by Friday dealers i visited were getting their heads around it.
It's got to have a few teething troubles, but by and large i expect it to be running quite well.....until reg change time and all hell will break loose by sheer volumes...assuming there's enough £olly left in the kitty.
It's got to be scam proof too, it would be too easy for unsrupulous scrappy's to swap chassis numbers from a rust bucket onto a one careful owner minter (you'd be surprised how many are being scrapped that fall into that category) and resell on.
So large established contractors and recycling yards are being used, which by their very nature will take a few weeks to gear up to the operation.
No doubt the press are hoping to be able to report serious malpractice to sell their seedy rags, so it's had to be made as difficult for con men as possible.
Another month and i think it will be running quite well.
Now if only we made more popular cars here to take full advantage.;)0 -
Perhaps Fiat have been cautious since day one then, because they have always stipulated MOT, RFL and insurance to be valid from point of order, til disposal.
Maybe now dealers have access to the claims system, its listing the criteria a bit more indepth, than the direct.gov website

I have been speaking previously to someone at BERR and she never mentioned insurance and categorically stated that tax need only be valid at date of order. I will call again on monday to verify and will get her to e-mail me exactly what is required.0

The idea is to get Genuine "Sacappers" not cars that would have failed the MOT and been scrapped anyway, or old bangers that someones had in their back garden for years.0

I thought that the idea was to help the struggling motor industry, in which case an MOT and Road Tax are farcical requirements.
A ten year+ car has gone to the breakers, a new car has been sold.0 -

Yes but you can see his point, the rust bucket heap will be scrapped shortly anyway...the good condition car will be crushed as well and thats 2 older polluting cars off the road.
No i don't agree with it either, and i'm aghast at some of the fine motors going to scrappage...but the Govt (term used loosely) has a green agenda too (to please our EU master's), and this system does get the older cars with many years left in them off the road.0 -

I am sure there are some excellent cars being scrapped as you suggest, some of them I suspect are actually worth around the £1000 mark anyway.
The " green agenda " is another farce, the actual manufacture of a new car does more damage to the environment than using an older car for a couple of more years or so.
Oh well, nothing we say, or do will change anything, the " experts " know best0 -
The tightening is clearly to ensure the system isnt being abused and people doing the bare minimum to get cars sitting in gardens traded in.0

A " scrap car " is a scrap car, at the end of the day, a new car will be sold,, that was the main reason behind all of this.
To keep moving the goal posts is unhelpful to all concerned.0
