Car Scrappage Scheme

I'd rather not say which Dealer as she's still in communication about it. Do you mind me asking which model you ordered on Sunday?0
-
I ordered the Comfort in red for delivery in Oct/Jan, another dealer (part of a different group) quoted Jan for the same model. They did have a couple that I could have had straight away. These were the Comfort in grey or blue. The Classic in metallic colours was quoted Dec/Jan, with the red Classic being March. Hope my dealer is not telling porkies!0

Some interesting views about the Scrappage scheme in recent Telegraph article, link below, such as:
- Be cautious, don't feel you have to rush into it....
- Evidence that Scrappage scheme is destroying UK jobs
(no surprise here, been saying it on Scrappage threads in MSE for a while).
- Top 10 models being bought on Scrappage - not one is UK built
link: Mr Money: caution urged over scrappage scheme
got to conclude - Scrappage scheme is much more about making UK govt. look good, rather than doing us any good.

Well, to be fair the article doesnt actually say it is destroying UK jobs, one man who sells car parts for old cars is saying that. Another car manufacturer says the exact opposite.0

it doesnt need to because everyone knows it is. i know plenty of folk in the motor industry who are struggling at the moment, some are looking for other jobs in different industries.
the salesman is the only winner.
i heard today some motor trade organisation was looking for the scheme to be extended further again. why not just make it permenant and make the car truely disposable with a limited lifespan of 10 years....work permit granted!0 -
People are struggling in every sector, not just the motor industry. My dil just been made redundant from hotel chain - after 5 years service. Son is on short time in the building trade.
If the government had put more money into our own manufacturing industries..................0 -

Modern cars require very little servicing. Dealer servicing where consumables are replaced is a very nice little earner for the dealership with profits being repatriated back to the manufacturer (in the case of the top 10 models being bought on scrappage, all the cars are made abroad).
Independent mechanics are certain to be adversely affected as (perfectly serviceable) bangers are cleared off the road. But these are the 'little people', so that's OK then.
So, UK needs to keep up with the European Joneses and we have our own scheme too. What a pity the Govt didn't put equally eye-catching boosts into the building trade and the hospitality trade - that would have creeated/protected real UK jobs.0 -
Well, thats the whole problem isnt it - too little too late.0

My son nearly lost his job because of Honda but luckily it was saved by Nissan, and no he's not a salesman. Glad I got rid of my new Honda civic and bought a Mini
ML.He who has four and spends five, needs neither purse nor pocket0 -
Neither Honda nor Nissan (notable for their UK based manufacturing) were on the top 10 list of cars bought on the scrappage scheme. Nor was the Mini there. All the cars on that list - built abroad. This is because the scheme only seems to be tempting buyers of rock bottom budget models + VW (buyers logic with VW might be - very low depreciation).
If the scheme is to be extended, there's still time for a rethink. A scheme with gives a % discount would have been better to tempt buyers of mid sized cars.
(and regarding the above post - schemes with directly favour UK industry have to be approved by EU bureaucrats first)0
