Indeed GS, and I suspect that many of these doomed older cars will be all paid for and owe the owners nothing, unlike many of the replacement new vehicles.

    Funny old world innit.. ;)

I wonder just how many perfectly good cars are going to an early car grave?

To many, My car is coming up for is 10th birthday, nothing wrong with it whatsoever, a quick look at figures and my car is actually more efficient than some of the newer models (besides the i10 with its small engine), Tax isn't any different!, the only time i'll be scrapping her is when something serious goes wrong that outwieghs the cost of repair.

Real savings are used cars that are 3-5 years old, so thats the route i'll be going down, but if this scrappage schemes helps new cars on the market (hence keeping the 3-5 year old market afloat when I come to buy) then good on them..
 What Happened To Summer!?

it is indeed. my focus is 5 and a half years old (time flies ehh) i bought it new,its hard to beleive the government now consider my car closer to the grave than the craddle now.
as much as i would love a change i have bigger fish to fry at the moment (and for the forseeable future) and buying another car just doesnt make any sense. i did think about it but parting with my focus will be hard work, i think even if a repair is needed that costs more than the value of the car i would probably still repair it to be honest, it owes me nothing.

I was in my local Mazda dealer last week and they were just having the latest scrappage trade-ins hauled away.

A thoroughly rotten D reg Toyota Carina - fair enough.
A Metro I couldn't see the reg plate - fair enough.
A J plate pick up that looked straight but a bit tatty - fair enough.
An N plate Mercedes 190 / C class (that the dealer told me had a full service history) - probably would have made someone a decent car.
An R reg Ford Galaxy that looked straight and clean - surely someone could have used this.
An S reg BMW 3 series that looked well cared for - definitely not a scrap candidate.

Obviously I don't know the mechanical condition of these vehicles but some of them at least would have provided good cheap motoring for someone.

As you may recall I'm about to change both my main vehicles. The RX-8 has been voluntarily terminated three months early and will be replaced by a Mazda6 estate on Tuesday and the Pug405 estate is going for scrappage and will be replaced by a Mazda2 on Friday. I'm planning on keeping both for at least 6 years and on that basis it makes reasonable economic sense. The 6 is on 3 years interest free (50% deposit) and the 2 is on a low interest 3 year deal with the scrappage being most of the deposit.
  • I always get the impression that some people are just jealous.

I'm scrapping my big, old Saab and getting a smaller, cleaner Seat.

To me it makes perfect economic sense. I would have looked at spending around £8k this year anyway on a replacement, it just so happens that the £8k get's me a brand new one instead of a used one.

Same amount put down as I would have on a 2nd hand one and the rest at 0% over 3 years and as I tend to keep my cars for 5-6 years it's a no brainer

Originally I had no intention of scrapping my car but it's gone from being cheap to run and never needing anything done to needing a new cat, new starter motor and the clutch is about to go - I only have reverse if I switch the engine off first and then put it into gear. This has all happened in the last year and I'm admitting defeat.

I will be very sad to see it go and like jansus and cheekyweegit I am apologising to my car and feeling guilty :o Until I have difficulty locating first at the traffic lights that is ;) and then I worry that it will last until I can get my new one

my car is now just not worth repairing although up until the last year it has run well which is why i am sad to see it go, but i need a reliable car for work no question, i would have to spend three hundred pounds to get it repaired its worth about 500 pounds, then there is the mot due in October which for the last few years has cost me 200 pounds plus so its a no brainer scrap and get two thousand towards brand new, for some people it works and i am happy it did for me

    Same here.

Cost me £600+ last year and £400+ this year already.

It's been a cracking car but it would need, soon, 4 new types, discs, pads and drums, the aircon unit has died, as has the radio, the central locking has a mind of its own.

It has no value bar a few hundred quid and I've done 100,000+ in it so the fact that someone wants to give me £2000 for it makes the scheme a no brainer for me.
