Car Scrappage Scheme

Alright need a little advice - my car has just failed its MOT, and the MOT has just expired. From what I understand I can get the scrappage deal if I do it within 14 days, correct?
As I have to act fast - what are the best deals you all have seen? I'm a graduate who is currently securing a job so I need something cheap for now.
To be honest I dont want to shell out for a new car but it seems pointless to have to scrap my old car or sell it for next to nothing when i can take advantage of this deal.
So yeah are there many cars available for between £4000-7000? If so which and what do you recommend.0 -
Some lovely classic or soon to be classic cars have been taken off the road by this scrappage scheme.
Here's what Classic Car Weekly said, I hope it hasn't been said earlier in the thread.- A scrappage scheme will lead to the early and unnecessary demise of a large number of historically significant classic cars which are collectable now or likely to become so in future.
- A scrappage scheme will not achieve the claimed environmental benefits as it will encourage wasteful unnecessary scrapping of perfectly viable motor cars, many of which have lower environmental impacts in use than a lot of new cars. Continued use of cars like this that have already been manufactured has a far lower environmental impact than the unnecessary scrapping of such vehicles and their replacement with newly-manufactured ones.
- A scrappage scheme takes no account of the massive environmental impact of manufacture in terms of sourcing and processing raw materials, transportation, assembly and distribution, and the impact of wasteful scrapping.
- Scrappage schemes targets the wrong cars. Only people who can afford to replace their old car with a new or nearly new one can benefit from it. These are also the people who are most likely to maintain an older car properly, and well maintained cars have the lowest environmental impact. Badly maintained cars owned by people who will never buy a new or nearly-new replacement will not be affected.
- The cost of the scheme will be enormous, and the money will not be directed to where it is most needed. While there is undoubtedly a good case for supporting the motor industry, this should be done openly, not in a round-about way that is designed to look like it is environmentally-friendly, but is actually encouraging wasteful built-in obsolescence.

All obvious from day 1. Which is why the Govt should have put all the scrappage money into seriously cutting VAT on hotel rooms and restaurant meals and home improvement instead. Not to mention dropping the 3% charge on selling a house over £250k.0

Yes, you have 14 days to order a scrappage deal. Have a look here - but remember, you may have to wait months to get your new car

Rob google parkers or get a copy from a news agent, its a good compact guide
What did your car fail on btw0 -
Hi, has anyone used the car scrappage scheme successfully in this way - trade in the eligible car for a new car, then trade in the new car at a higher value against any used car up to say 3 years old? e.g. trade in eligible car for new renault 3 dr extreme, then trade in for 5 dr expression up to three years old? Is there enough margin in the part exchange to make it possible to use the new car, obtain say a 3 year old car and receive say up to £1000 back from the dealer for the value of the new car? many thanks0

Gawd, bit of a performance that would be!
I doubt it would be worth it0 -

It's a T reg fiat bravo nearing 80k miles - ive had 5 years, was my first car and I love it! Reasonably trouble free untill now (i know thats supprising for a fiat!)
But yeah whole underside is rusty as anything - things picked up by the MOT were:
excessively corroded brake pipes all around
offside rear brake recording little or no effort
offside front shock absorber has an excessively worn linkage
and the offside front subframe mounting is excessively corroded(has a big hole in).
It was a trusted garrage we always use - they wouldn't pick up a problem unless it really was one. He seemed to think even if I got this seen to, I'd have to get even more done next year.
So yeah no idea what to do really, trying to decide between: scrappage, repair or cheap 2nd hand.0 -

I think you'd probably break even, plus if you need to take out finace you technically shouldnt sell the car on till its paid off.0 -
 Grrrr, my dad has been trying to put my mam off buying a new car this weekend and now she is having second thoughts. He has filled her with negatives because he is jealous, pure and simple. He hates the fact that she learn to drive, got a job, car, a little flat etc after she left him a few years ago but she is easily lead and is having serious doubts
Sorry for the rant, just I hate people making out they are helping you when they are not!!
On the plus side, we drove the Mazda 2 yesterday and it was a fantatic drive....if my car was a little older I would scrap it in an instant
Today we are going looking at second hand C3's but hopefully today will be decision day either way. I love my gorgeous little girl0
