Thanks for those who advised that I give up on trying to find a Cee'd SR-7. I am now looking at a Hyundai i30 although I can't get a definite delivery date - seems to be a common problem!

The Hyundai dealer confused me with his interpretation of the MOT requirement. As I understand it, I can have my car MOT'd and, if it fails (a lot of rust and 17 years old), I can place a valid order order within 14 days of the failure. He claims I cannot place a scrappage order once my car is within 14 days of the date when my present MOT runs out.

What is the situation on the 14 days to or from the expiry of a valid MOT with regard to placing a scrappage order? Is the dealer just trying to rush me into placing the order?

the problem that is arising is different dealers are interpreting the word 'of' to mean different things

the wording is, you have to place an order within 14 days of your MOT expiry

to me the word OF, should mean you have 14 days after expiry, but alot of dealers are reading it to mean 14 days before expiry

Ive even quoted examples to dealers ie - if i buy something from a shop, the back of the receipt usually states, you can return this item for a refund within 28 days of purchase, in this case the word OF is used in the future tense, as i cant return an item 28 days before i buy it - the response i usually get to this, is a purplexed look and no comeback - other than erm the scrappage rules say 14 days before expiry - no they dont they say 14 days of expiry

Tbh its like banging your head against a brick wall

I hope you enjoy your new car :)

Thank you. I have to say I am loving it!

Funnily enough, i never considered my 10 yr old Micra knackered. She went fine. I even worried over whether to scrap her, if it was a waste.

    BUT

I now find myself starting to develop a boy racer mentality as a middle aged lady LOL. Normally I drive sedately and with an eye to fuel econonmy. But today I beat a new (but not as new as my i10 LOL) Mini cooper away from the lights and I wished we weren't in a 30 zone.

Husband and I now manouevre politely over who will take the new car and who'll take the other old one to work. I wish I could find another 5 grand to replace that one too. Suddenly I start to see the attraction of debt and how all those people on the DFW board got there.

    BAD CFC!

im guessing you were the only person involved in this race then?

Yes, know what you mean. Its a bit like when you go to a shoe shop isnt it. You think your old shoes are fine and dont really need replacing until you see them alongside new ones and realise how rough they are.

Im hoping Ill be able to manage the Golf diesel when it arrives. Never driven diesel before and on the test drive I cut out a couple of times - due to being in wrong gear for diesel or something. I guess Ill learn.

Ha.You wish, Mr Sarky Spanners! :p

i10's got a nice zippy acceleration round town. No idea what she's like on the motorway but I'll find out later today :p

hethmar, I'm sure you'll get on well with your diesel once you're used to it. Bet you can't wait now :)

the mini does 0 - 60 in 8 seconds your i10 (unless youve made some serious modifications) will do 0 - 60 in 12.8 so if you werent in a 30 zone as you so wished then the mini would have left you standing. my transit van fully loaded would be quicker off the lights than your i10.

  • The new mini is not a budget car, 13 seconds is reasonable and I doubt the bit about the transit, maybe a sprinter !

Some small cars do feel quite responsive upto 30 or 40, 60 would be a gear change. I think its because they are lightweight where as your average bmw can be closer to 2 tons then 1

i was comparing it to the mini as thats what cfc says they were racing.
trust me my transit is faster than 13 seconds.

You need to direct the dealer to the Scrappage FAQ on the BERR website:

    http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/sectors/automotive/scrappage/FAQs/page51710.html#0

Are cars with MOT test certificates which have recently expired eligible for the scheme?

Yes, provided the MOT certificate has expired no more than 14 days from the order date of the new vehicle. In such cases, you will need to make arrangements with the dealer for the collection of the old vehicle (as it could not be driven on the public highway). The dealer will also need to satisfy themselves that the paperwork and the vehicle match, and are in order.
