Thanks for the post, ive already read that but it doesnt acutally specify whether the scrappage scheme is gaurnateed when you apply.

I went to see a car and asked what would happen if the Scheme ran out and the dealer (young - dont know if he knew the details) implied I would get the full bill, therefore having to pay an extra £2000 or forfeit the deposit.

    Any dealers on here ?

On my vehicle order form it says "less scrappage subsidy £2000" and I checked to see if this is the price I pay and the dealer said that it wouldn't go up, but this was just Toyota, all dealers are different though, Toyota price fix because it creates bad feeling between the brand and the customer if the price keeps increasing, if you are going to get a car do it sooner than later as 60,000 of the 300,000 deals have already been done.

From the information available when you sign up for your new car you have 4 months from the order to take delivery. If four months have elapsed you have to re-apply to the scrappage scheme. If all 350,000 have gone by that time you are screwed.

Have a look at the FAQ's on the BERR website. I have also seen this four month rule elsewhere but can't remember where.

Are their restrictions on the time allowed from ordering the vehicle to taking delivery?
Yes, the new vehicle has to be delivered within four months of the order being placed. This is because the scheme is time limited with a fixed budget. Dealers will let you know if the required vehicle cannot be delivered within this timeframe and discuss alternatives with you.

    Hi
Is there any comparison on the best buys available for bottom of the range new cars eligible for the scrappage scheme? I'm a pensioner and may scrap my 16 year old car but I don't know much about new car technology. I'd be thankful for any advice/research done on this.

I have ordered a Hyundai i10. If you go on their website there is an option (via new cars - compare us) to compare with other models in the price range via competetive advantage system. For the i10 classic it compares with:

    Peugeot 107 1.0 Urban 3dr
    Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i 5dr
    Volkswagen Fox 1.4 3dr
Fiat Panda 1.1 Active ECO 5dr

My suggestion - get yourself a list down to half a dozen cars and go and test drive them. Reviews can be misleading - what matters is how the cars feel to you.
  • I have been very interested in the scrappage scheme as my car is 18 years old and was looking forward to a new car.But as i should have known there is a fundamental flaw in this scheme.
Firstly i contacted kia and peugeot as they had deals on their small cars.I was told yes i could have £1000 off the price with government scrappage but they would not give me the dealers £1000 off as they said they had already dropped the price.I stated "yes but you have dropped the price for everyone so i want the government £1000 and your £1000" but they would not have it.
Finally it is not compulsory for car companies to sign up to these schemes but when they do they enter into an agreement with the government that they also give £1000 off the price that joe public is getting.Seemingly not the case and i wonder where the law lies on this or if the government know that these car companies are relinquishing on their agreement.

The way they get round it is they are offering £1000 off their list price, not the cash price. The cash price is already a discount off the list price.

I suppose it's no different to Ryanair fly for £1 (add on the taxes and fees) and shops saying offer can't be used in conjunction with any other offer.

Annoying but probably legal all the same.

Not forgetting that many car makers have increased their list prices to reduce their actual payment in the scheme.
  • The government promise was that you would be able to get £2000 of the full published list price of a new car, the govt would supply £1k, the mfr to supply the other £1k. That is what you entitled to, not another £2k off an already- discounted price where the list price is already reduced with a discount.
If a mfr or dealer can offer any further discount above the £2k offered in the scheme, then they will..and many do. Others, who had less than a £1k profit margin already in the cars have had no choice but to revert customers back to full list price before reducing the £2k scrappage amount on the invoice as there is simpy not enough in it.
Bear in mind many mfrs on smaller cars are losing more money than they were before the scheme as they were working on less than a £1k margin already..but now have to offer a £1k discount to match the government's.

Other posters are coorrect, if you car cannot be delivered in 4mths the dealer has to re-apply for scrappage monies....so the later that date is the higher the risk of money no longer being available. You also need to ensure the car is ready this year...whether using the srcap scheme or not..as from Jan1st there'll be another 2.5% VAT added to your invoice at payment time!

    .

But you are still getting over £1k off a new car and your one is knocking on now - wouldnt it still be worth getting a nice new little car with a full warranty?

no they havent increased prices to cover the scheme, its just the scheme has come into being, at roughly the same time of year that all manufacturers update their prices. June/July has always been when the new prices are published, ready for the new plate in September
