Calorie burning is such a personal thing and everyone's different according to size, gender, body composition, fitness levels, effort etc.
My calorie burns are lower than average, but I burn about 240 cals/hour doing something very gentle like a leisurely bike ride or slowish walk (50% HRmax), and up to about 500 cals/hour at top effort running (95% HRmax).
I used to do wii fit until I started heart rate measuring the sessions, and found out that for me personally (others will be different) the 'aerobics' didn't even come close to going for a slow walk, intensity wise. I was no slouch either - 4060 for 30 mins free step, 8898m for 30 mins free jogging!
I average about 2.5lb gain for TOTM, but it has been known to be up to around 5lb  It usually starts 7 days before, and goes through to about day 3 then disappears so I seem to carry the extra for a long time too
Well done again on your running Raph and glad you got the gadget, I know you won't regret it! My latest encounter of note on one of my jogs was an Adder - and it was alive
BB New Bike!!!!! :j:j:j0 -
ellawood - it sounds like you have an added incentive to stay on track with your weightloss journey, and being a WW leader will be very rewarding for you I'm sure. Congratulations on your loss so far, that's a big achievement so far. Have you been losing it using WW?
I'm pleased to report a -1lb loss (actually more like 5lb if I were to take into account the shock 4lb gain I got after my weigh in last week). I knew the odd indulgence here and there would creep up on me, but wham! in 2 days it was there, and then there again. Bootcamp for the past 5 days has really done the trick, and I plan to keep that way.
Sticking with using foodfocus.com to log all my food intake is helping me again no end, and I regret forgetting to use it in the past couple of months.
This morning I allowed myself a treat after my weigh in, and have had 2 crumpets and a slice of toast. I now feel terribly guilty, despite it being within my calorie aim for breakfast.
I'm now off out into the garden to put a load of bedding plants in that I bought yesterday.
Well done to all this week's losers & STS's, and for those not in that camp, keep on track, and the new week starts from here! One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing
Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home0 -
I just dropped my toast in the floor! It landed honey side up though............ 7 second rule & all that......... :rotfl:
Thanks for all your info Missy™, I was thinking about buying one of those wee gadgets that tells you what you've burnt doing what to try & figure out what the best thing for me is! Any tips guys? & I'll keep Guitar Hero as my 'rainy day' exercise! :rotfl: :rotfl:
I got a gorgeous purple & white bike for Christmas '07 that I'm ashamed to say has only been used a handful of times! (& mostly to help carry washing down to my mums when my machine broke! lol) At the moment I live up 2 flights of quite steep stairs & even though I think I could get it down (with a fair bit of swearing I'd bet.... lol) I really don't think I'd get it back up. I can't leave it downstairs as the 'secure' door is broken & is left open onto the street. It'd be gone before I was even at the top of the stairs! It sits outside my flat at the top of the stairs, the neighbours must wonder why I have it as it's never moved since I moved in! :rotfl: :rotfl: However, my landlords selling the flat (!) so I'm having to find somewhere else, hopefully on the groundfloor/with a shed!!!!! lol
Does anyone use a bike pedometer to tell them how far they've gone etc? If you do, do you think its any good?I wonder when apples became a household luxury?:rotfl:
I know Victory, sad isn't it!!!!!
FFM Myself & one of the other leaders are going to spend tomorrow making up Geocache bags then hiding & plotting them on an area of wooded land that one of the scout leaders owns, so thanks for the great idea, the kids are going to love it!

Scottish Lass - generally it's the time/effort you put in that makes the difference, rather than the type of activity
Sorry if that's stating the obvious! I quite often prefer to do slightly lower effort activities for a longer time, than the real heavy duty stuff!
The best thing for you will be whatever you enjoy and can fit into your lifestyle!
Here's how most of my different cardio activities 'rate' for me in approximate terms, this is a bit generalised and there are always exceptions but maybe it will help someone:
Easy (50-60% effort)
Gentle cycling, easy walks, slow hikes, low tension exercise bike, easy badminton, light Step, rowing (on water), some home DVDs, leisure swimming.
Light-medium (60-70% effort)
General swimming, walking/hiking, higher intensity Step, mountain biking, road & off road cycling, higher effort exercise bike, inline skating (ramps/distance), ice skating, rowing machine, manual treadmill walk, more competitive badminton, jumping, recumbent bike machine.
Medium (70-80% effort)
Serious gym session (multi equip), fast inline/ice skating, rope skipping, light or stop/start jogging, short easy runs, micro scooter (uphill), cross trainer, stair climber.
Heavy-hard (80%+ effort)
Higher intensity running & interval sessions, manual treadmill very fast incline walk, motorised treadmill 15% incline fast walk, cross trainer fast & high tension.0 -
My young son has come home asking to walk to school alone, not sure on that one, too young at 9 I think but googled it, there is no age that a child is 'acting against the law' etc and found this which is nothing to do with food whatsoever but could be a help to someone else finding it hard to come up with a reason why they should not be allowed to walk on their own
The Test of Twelve- Does your child know how to honor his feelings? If someone makes him uncomfortable, that's an important signal.
- Are you as the parent strong enough to hear about any experience your child has had, no matter how unpleasant?
- Does your child know it's okay to rebuff and defy adults?
- Does your child know it's okay to be assertive?
- Does your child know how to ask for assistance or help?
- Does your child know how to choose who to ask? For example, he should look for a woman to help him.
- Does your child know how to describe his peril?
- Does your child know it's okay to strike, even to injure, someone if he believes he is in danger, and that you'll support any action he takes as a result of feeling uncomfortable or afraid?
- Does your child know it's okay to make noise, to scream, to yell, to run?
- Does your child know that if someone ever tries to force him to go somewhere, what he screams should include, ''This is not my father''? Onlookers seeing a child scream or even struggle are likely to assume the adult is a parent.
- Does your child know that if someone says, ''Don't yell,'' the thing to do is yell? The corollary is if someone says, ''Don't tell,'' the thing to do is tell.
- Does your child know to fully resist ever going anywhere out of public view with someone he doesn't know, and particularly to resist going anywhere with someone who tries to persuade him?

Victory how far do you live from his school & is it s straight home route or are there a lot of roads to cross? Are there other kids (neighbours) that he could walk home with? A couple of years ago a girl in the town that I live in (she was 8 or 9 at the time) was run over walking home from school because she didn't cross with the lollipop lady, instead she crossed a lot further down at a cross roads. She was in hospital for a few weeks, but thankfully is ok now. But for every story like that there's hundreds of other kids who walk home without any problems at all. It's a bigger step for you than it is for your son, but you'll know yourself whether he's responsible enough or not..•
